
Wings of Fear 3D: Pistons at Dawn isn’t taking the easy route. The upcoming World War I combat game for AGA Amigas combines real-time 3D dogfighting with dedicated 2D bombing missions. One moment, you’ll be chasing enemy aircraft through open skies. The next, you’ll be lining up an attack on factories and other ground targets from a completely different perspective. That’s a lot for one game to handle. It’s being developed by Steve Birch and Roar Tjørhom, two creators whose previous Amiga projects fit neatly into the game’s split design. Birch is building the code and 3D engine, while Tjørhom is handling the 2D graphics, interface and bombing sections. The project remains in development, so there’s no confirmed release date or final hardware specification yet. We do know that it’s aimed at AGA machines with Fast RAM, which tells you straight away that this isn’t being designed around a basic, unexpanded Amiga 1200.
Two developers, two areas of expertise
The development partnership makes sense. Steve Birch is responsible for the programming and the real-time 3D side of the game. He previously created Microlyte Tankzone, an AGA action title built around three-dimensional tank combat. Players drive through open environments, collect crystals, pick up upgrades and deal with hostile vehicles.
Tankzone matters here because it shows Birch already has experience getting real-time 3D action running on Amiga hardware. That’s no small task. A flight game places different demands on an engine, but many of the core problems remain familiar: movement, visibility, collision detection, enemy behaviour and frame-rate management.
Birch also made Sleigh Ride and Seek, a smaller 3D flight game in which the player controls a sleigh through a real-time environment. It’s lighter in tone and far more compact than Pistons at Dawn, but it still deals with movement through a three-dimensional space. Now he’s taking that experience into a much larger project.
Roar Tjørhom brings a different skill set. He created Wings of Fear, an AGA shoot-’em-up released in 2025. That game puts players in control of a World War I biplane across six vertically scrolling missions, with aerial enemies, ground targets, bombing sequences and boss battles. It’s a direct and useful foundation for Pistons at Dawn.
Tjørhom already knows how to design biplane combat from a 2D viewpoint. He’s worked with scrolling landscapes, enemy formations, target placement and bombing mechanics. For the new game, he’s creating the 2D artwork, heads-up display and ground-attack missions.
He’s also working on Wings of Fear II, a side-scrolling follow-up with larger environments, parallax effects and a broader mix of ground and air combat. That project hasn’t been completed yet, but its design suggests Tjørhom has already been experimenting with more varied mission structures. Pistons at Dawn brings those two backgrounds together.

The 3D dogfights will make or break it
Let’s be honest. The 3D combat will attract most of the early attention. Real-time dogfighting on an Amiga is difficult to get right. The hardware has to calculate aircraft positions, draw the environment, update enemies and respond to the player without making the action feel slow or unstable. A flight game can’t hide poor performance.
When you’re chasing an enemy aircraft, you need immediate control. A slight delay can ruin an attack run. An uneven frame rate can make it hard to judge distance, direction or speed. If the horizon jumps around or enemy planes disappear into the scenery, combat quickly becomes frustrating. Birch is using a custom 3D engine rather than adapting a general-purpose system. That should give him more control over how the game uses the Amiga’s available resources.
Open skies may look simpler than a detailed indoor environment, but they bring their own problems. Aircraft must remain visible at useful distances. The engine needs to show movement clearly. It also has to give the player enough visual information to understand where an enemy is heading. Clean graphics will matter more than decoration.
Distinct aircraft shapes, a readable horizon and a steady sense of movement will do far more for the game than extra scenery. You need to know what’s happening at a glance, especially when another aircraft is turning across your path.

The interface needs to stay out of the way
Tjørhom is also creating the heads-up display, and that part of the game deserves more attention than it usually gets. A flight-combat interface has to communicate speed, direction, damage and ammunition without blocking the view. That sounds simple. It isn’t. Too little information leaves the player guessing. Too much turns the screen into a control panel.
The best solution will likely be a compact display that gives players the essentials and leaves most of the screen open for combat. It should also remain visually consistent with the 2D missions, so the game doesn’t feel like two unrelated projects stitched together. That connection matters. Pistons at Dawn uses two very different visual systems, but the campaign needs to feel like one continuous experience.
Bombing missions change the pace
The 2D bombing sections aren’t just a bonus mode. They’ll focus on attacks against factories and other strategic ground installations. Instead of circling behind enemy aircraft, players will have to plan an approach, identify targets and release bombs at the right moment. That creates a different kind of pressure.
Dogfighting is reactive. The situation changes constantly, and you’re often responding to another pilot’s movements. Bombing runs can feel more deliberate, but they also punish poor timing. Miss the target, and you may not get another chance.
The 2D format also lets the developers place more objects on screen in a controlled way. Buildings, anti-aircraft guns, vehicles and defensive aircraft can all form part of a carefully designed attack route. The danger is repetition. If every bombing mission follows the same pattern, the idea will wear thin quickly. The game will need different target layouts, defensive arrangements and mission goals to keep the 2D sections interesting. They also need to matter to the campaign. Players should feel that destroying a factory or installation has a purpose beyond reaching the end of the level.
A campaign needs more than rising difficulty
The planned campaign will feature historical missions that become harder as the game progresses. That’s a good starting point, but difficulty alone won’t carry it. The game needs variety. Interception missions could ask players to stop enemy bombers. Patrol stages might focus on defending an area. Ground-attack missions could introduce anti-aircraft guns, moving vehicles and restricted attack routes. Later missions could combine several ideas.
A stage might begin with a 3D air battle before moving into a 2D bombing run. Another could start with an attack on ground targets and end with enemy fighters arriving during the escape. That kind of structure would make the two modes feel connected rather than separate. Historical accuracy can give the campaign context, but the game still has to be enjoyable. Players won’t care how carefully a mission follows a real event if the objectives feel unclear or the controls fight against them. Good mission design comes first.

A project with a clear identity
Wings of Fear 3D: Pistons at Dawn already stands apart from a standard arcade shooter. It combines Birch’s experience with real-time 3D Amiga games and Tjørhom’s work on AGA biplane shooters. Their roles aren’t vague. Each developer is handling the part of the project that matches his previous work. That gives the game a solid foundation.
There are still plenty of unanswered questions. We don’t know the final system requirements, the exact number of missions or how smoothly the 3D engine will run on different Amiga setups. The balance between the 3D and 2D sections also remains crucial. One weak half could drag down the whole game. But the concept is strong. Pistons at Dawn isn’t relying on a single visual trick or a familiar name. It’s trying to build a full combat game around two distinct forms of play. Now it has to prove that they belong together. None the less, this is really impressive!
