Two versions for two kinds of player

The main difference between the Air Y and Air Y Pro sits right on the front. The standard Air Y has one analogue stick beneath the directional pad. The Pro version adds another stick beneath the face buttons, giving it the more familiar twin-stick layout used by modern controllers.

That one change affects far more than appearance. A single-stick device should work well for 8-bit, 16-bit and many early 3D systems. It also keeps the front panel tidy and could help Mangmi keep the price down. For buyers who mainly want older games, the second stick would often sit unused.

The Air Y Pro should suit a wider mix of software. Modern Android games regularly expect twin sticks, and game streaming services usually mirror a full console controller. Later 3D systems can also rely heavily on a second analogue input.

Mangmi hasn’t said whether the Pro model will also receive more memory, extra storage or a larger battery. That’s worth watching. A second stick alone may not justify a big price increase, but stronger hardware certainly could. At least the basic idea is easy to understand. One model keeps things simple. The other offers more control.

The vertical design looks clean

Both handhelds use a traditional vertical layout, with the display positioned above the controls. It’s a familiar shape, but Mangmi has given it a cleaner and more modern finish. The screen takes up a large part of the front panel, and the bezels appear relatively narrow. That helps the unit look compact without making the display feel cramped.

The analogue sticks also feature illuminated rings. Some buyers will like the gaming-style lighting. Others may switch it off immediately. Either way, it gives the Air Y a recognisable look. There also appears to be a wheel on the side of the casing, most likely for volume control. That’s a small detail, but a physical wheel can be quicker and easier to use than a pair of tiny buttons.

Mangmi has shown black and grey versions so far. The grey model has a slightly older console-inspired look, while the black version feels more understated. The screen size hasn’t been confirmed. Judging from the proportions, it appears to sit somewhere around the four-to-five-inch range, but that remains an estimate.

The aspect ratio matters just as much as the size. A 4:3 panel would suit many older console systems and reduce wasted screen space. A wider display would make more sense for Android games and streaming, though older titles could end up with large borders on either side. Until Mangmi publishes the exact display details, it’s impossible to know which audience the screen favours.

Qualcomm hardware is a sensible choice

Mangmi has confirmed that the Air Y range will use a Qualcomm processor, but it hasn’t named the exact chip. That detail could make or break the product. A lower-cost Snapdragon processor could offer solid performance for classic systems, lightweight Android games and streaming. It could also help with battery life and keep heat under control.

A more powerful chip would open the door to heavier Android software and more demanding emulation. The trade-off would be obvious: higher price, more heat and potentially shorter battery life. Raw speed isn’t everything in a handheld this small. A fast processor won’t help much if the device becomes too hot or starts slowing itself down after 20 minutes. Mangmi needs to balance performance with cooling, battery use and fan noise.

Qualcomm hardware does bring some practical advantages. Snapdragon chips enjoy broad support across Android apps, game-streaming clients and many popular emulators. Users generally know what to expect from them, and developers often optimise software around the platform. Still, the exact model matters enormously. Saying a device uses Qualcomm hardware tells us the brand, not the performance level. Mangmi will need to provide that answer soon.

Android gives the Air Y room to do more

The Air Y won’t be limited to one type of software. Because it runs Android, users should be able to install native games, streaming apps, front-end launchers and a wide selection of emulators. That flexibility gives the device a wider purpose than a basic handheld running a locked-down operating system.

You could use it for shorter classic games on the train, then stream a PC title at home using the same device. That sounds useful. The software experience will decide whether it actually feels useful.

Android handhelds can become frustrating when manufacturers don’t spend enough time on controller mapping, sleep mode, updates and display scaling. A device may have capable hardware but still feel unfinished if every app needs manual adjustment.

Mangmi needs to get the basics right. The system should wake quickly. Controls should work properly across apps. Games should scale cleanly to the screen. The interface shouldn’t fight the user. Those things rarely appear in a specification table, but they shape the daily experience.

Comfort could be the bigger challenge

Vertical handhelds look portable, but comfort varies wildly. The lower controls can sit too close to the bottom edge, leaving your hands with little support. That becomes especially noticeable during longer sessions. The Air Y Pro may face the tougher ergonomic test because its second analogue stick sits beneath the face buttons. On a small device, that position can force your thumb into an awkward angle.

The shape of the rear casing will matter. So will the thickness of the body and the placement of the shoulder buttons. Mangmi’s early images show a fairly flat front, but they don’t tell us how the device feels in the hand. A product can look neat in photographs and still become uncomfortable after half an hour.

The directional pad will also need close attention. Buyers in this category care about accuracy, especially when playing platform games, fighting games or older titles that rely on precise diagonal inputs.

The analogue sticks raise another question. Mangmi hasn’t confirmed whether they use traditional potentiometers or Hall-effect sensors. Hall-effect sticks can reduce the risk of drift, though implementation still matters. The shoulder controls remain unclear too. Stacked shoulder buttons would help with modern games, while inline buttons could keep the casing thinner. These details aren’t minor. They decide whether people keep using the device once the novelty wears off.

Pricing will decide where it fits

Mangmi plans to reveal more details later in July, with pre-orders expected around 30 July. The price will probably decide how much attention the Air Y receives. The vertical handheld market is already crowded. Buyers can choose from compact Linux systems, Android devices and several models with similar screen sizes and control layouts.

The standard Air Y may have the stronger position. If Mangmi gives it a decent screen, reliable controls and enough Qualcomm performance at a sensible price, the single-stick model could appeal to buyers who don’t need a full modern controller layout. It could be the simpler and cheaper option.

The Air Y Pro faces harder comparisons. Once a handheld adds twin sticks and Android, buyers expect it to handle newer games, streaming and heavier emulation. They’ll compare processor performance, memory, cooling and wireless connectivity much more closely. A weak processor would make the second stick feel wasted. A high price would push the Air Y Pro towards larger handhelds with better ergonomics and more powerful hardware. Mangmi needs to find the right middle ground.

A promising design, but the specification sheet still matters

The Air Y and Air Y Pro make a good first impression. They look compact, the two-model strategy feels logical and the Qualcomm platform should give Mangmi plenty of software options. The narrow bezels, side wheel and illuminated stick rings also help the handhelds stand apart visually. But we still need the important numbers.

The processor, display resolution, battery size, memory, storage, wireless support and price will tell us whether these devices can compete. Software support will matter just as much. Mangmi has shown an appealing shell. Now it needs to prove that the hardware inside has been chosen with the same care.

The standard Air Y could work well as a focused, affordable handheld for older games and lighter Android use. The Air Y Pro could serve buyers who want broader control support in the same compact shape. Both ideas have potential. The next announcement will tell us whether Mangmi has built two genuinely useful handhelds or simply two attractive variations on a familiar design.
