
Getting NEC PC-98 software running is often the easy part. Understanding what the operating system wants from you can be much harder. You may have a working emulator, the correct disk images and a game or application ready to launch. Then MS-DOS presents a Japanese installation screen, a configuration menu or an error message you can’t quickly interpret. DOS98-English tackles that exact problem by giving PC-98 MS-DOS 5.00A-H a practical English-language interface. It doesn’t redesign DOS. It doesn’t try to turn the PC-98 into an IBM-compatible machine either. Instead, it translates the parts of the operating system that users regularly need to read, including setup screens, menus, warnings, help pages and maintenance tools. The result is straightforward. You spend less time guessing and more time using the system.
More than a translated command prompt
A few English command messages wouldn’t be enough here. PC-98 MS-DOS 5.00 came as an eight-disk set, and each disk handled a different part of the operating environment. DOS98-English covers all eight.
That includes the boot disk, installation files, DOS Shell, backup tools, disk utilities, recovery software, memory-management components and NEC-specific system programs. Common utilities such as CHKDSK, MEM, DOSKEY and UNDELETE become much easier to use when their options and warnings appear in English.
This wider coverage is one of the project’s strongest points. A half-translated operating system can still leave you stuck when something goes wrong. You might understand the command prompt but struggle with a hard-disk formatting tool or recovery menu. DOS98-English aims to keep the experience consistent across the full disk set. It’s not perfect English software from the ground up. That’s not the goal. It’s a working localisation of the original PC-98 operating environment.
The patching process keeps things controlled
DOS98-English doesn’t include Microsoft or NEC operating-system files. You need to provide your own supported Japanese FDI disk images, named DISK0.FDI through DISK7.FDI. The project then applies IPS patches to those images.
Automated scripts are available for Windows, Linux and macOS, while Python users can run the process directly. Before changing anything, the patcher checks each disk image against its expected SHA-256 checksum. If one image comes from the wrong release, has been modified or uses a different dump, the process should stop rather than blindly writing data into the wrong locations. That check matters.
IPS patches change bytes at exact positions. Even a small difference in the original disk image can produce broken files, failed boots or unpredictable behaviour. PC-98 software archives often contain several versions of what appears to be the same release, so filename alone isn’t enough. The patched disks are also written to a separate output folder. Your original images stay untouched, which makes testing and troubleshooting much less stressful.
Why MS-DOS 5.00 mattered on the PC-98
NEC launched the original PC-9801 in 1982. It used an x86 processor, but it wasn’t a standard IBM PC clone. NEC built the platform around its own display hardware, keyboard layout, storage systems and Japanese text support. That meant PC-98 computers needed their own versions of operating systems and applications.
MS-DOS became a major part of the platform, especially in Japanese offices, schools and businesses. By the time MS-DOS 5.00A-H appeared, the PC-98 range had moved through several generations of 286, 386 and 486 hardware. NEC was also introducing newer PC-9821 models, while Windows 3.x and DOS/V were changing the wider Japanese computer market.
MS-DOS 5.00A-H reflects that transition. It offers familiar DOS commands, but it also includes PC-98-specific hardware tools, Japanese input support, HIMEM, EMM386, DOS Shell, disk maintenance programs and protected-mode components. It’s a complete working environment, not just a boot loader for old games.
What stays in Japanese, and why
DOS98-English doesn’t translate every piece of Japanese data inside the system. That would be risky and, in many cases, pointless. Japanese dictionaries, character tables, keyboard data and Kana-Kanji conversion resources need to remain intact because the operating system relies on them. Changing those files could break text input or cause software compatibility problems.
The project instead focuses on information meant for the person using the machine. Menus, prompts, descriptions and warnings receive the attention. Functional language data stays where it belongs.
Japanese applications will still appear in Japanese. Games won’t suddenly gain English dialogue, and business programs won’t receive translated menus. But the DOS layer around them becomes much clearer.
A useful upgrade for PC-98 emulation
DOS98-English won’t add new hardware support or make incompatible software run. It won’t replace a proper PC-98 emulator. What it does is remove a major barrier from everyday system use.
You can understand installation options, read error messages and work with maintenance utilities without repeatedly stopping to translate the screen.
