
Most people walking into a Subway probably don’t think about the computers running the digital menu boards. They’re just part of the background, quietly displaying sandwiches, prices and meal deals. But behind those screens sits real PC hardware. When one restaurant replaced its menu system, three Advantech DS-081 media players became available for testing. Instead of sending them straight to recycling, they were upgraded, loaded with different operating systems and pushed into service as compact gaming machines. The results were mixed. They were also far more interesting than expected.
Commercial hardware with familiar PC parts
The Advantech DS-081 wasn’t built for gaming. It was designed to run digital signs for long hours without making noise or taking up much space. Inside each unit sits an Intel Core i3-6100U processor. It’s a dual-core mobile chip running at 2.3 GHz, paired with Intel HD Graphics 520. The original machines came with 4 GB of DDR4 memory and a 64 GB solid-state drive. That’s not much by current gaming standards.
Still, the basic hardware is more flexible than the thin metal case suggests. The DS-081 includes two HDMI outputs, four USB 3.0 ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet connections and Mini-PCIe expansion. The storage and memory can also be replaced, which makes upgrades fairly straightforward. It’s a proper small-form-factor PC. It just spent its first working life showing sandwich menus.
Windows works, but storage fills quickly
The first machine received a memory upgrade to 8 GB before Windows 10 was installed. Once the original signage software was gone, the computer behaved like any other Windows PC. There was no unusual locked interface or restaurant-only operating environment. The desktop loaded, drivers worked and ordinary software could be installed. The biggest problem was storage.
A 64 GB SSD doesn’t leave much room after Windows, system updates and basic applications. A few larger games can fill it almost immediately. Anyone planning to use one of these systems regularly would want a bigger drive. The processor also sets clear limits. Everyday desktop work is fine. Older games are fine. Modern 3D releases are another matter.
macOS runs, though not particularly well
The second machine was turned into a Hackintosh and configured to identify itself as a 2016 MacBook Pro. It booted into macOS, which is impressive on hardware never intended to run Apple’s operating system. Yet the setup had a major weakness: graphics acceleration didn’t work correctly.
Without proper GPU support, the interface and applications can feel slower than they should. Video playback, visual effects and games all suffer. It’s an interesting technical experiment, but it doesn’t make much sense as a daily computer. Updates could also break the installation at any time. So yes, macOS runs. But that doesn’t mean it runs well enough to recommend.
Linux offers the best gaming experience
The third system used Bazzite, a Linux distribution designed around gaming and a Steam-style console interface. A direct SteamOS installation caused problems because of storage compatibility, so Bazzite became the practical alternative. That turned out to be a good choice.
The interface works well with a controller, and the operating system doesn’t demand as many resources as a full Windows setup. It also suits a small living-room PC, where users may want to turn the machine on and jump straight into a game. For lightweight titles, it’s a neat setup.
Older games run better than modern blockbusters
Peggle ran smoothly. That wasn’t much of a surprise, but it confirmed that older and less demanding PC games suit the hardware well. Minecraft also worked. Even large TNT explosions were possible, although performance dropped when the screen became busy. It remained playable, but the ageing processor and integrated graphics couldn’t hide forever.
Grand Theft Auto V pushed the machine too far. The game launched, but the Intel HD Graphics 520 couldn’t deliver a comfortable experience. The processor, shared graphics memory and fanless cooling system all became limiting factors. This PC was built to display static menus all day. It wasn’t built to chase cars through Los Santos.
Emulation may be the better fit
These systems make far more sense as emulation boxes or machines for smaller indie games. The USB ports can handle controllers, keyboards and external storage. Dual HDMI outputs give users several display options, while wired Ethernet provides a stable network connection. The compact enclosure also fits easily behind a television or inside an arcade cabinet.
Older console emulation should work well. Some PlayStation 2 and original Xbox games may also run, though performance will depend heavily on the title and emulator settings. Don’t expect every game to work perfectly.
A useful machine within clear limits
A former Subway menu board computer won’t replace a current gaming desktop, console or handheld PC. It’s too slow for that. But with more memory, a larger SSD and the right operating system, it can handle older games, indie releases, media playback and emulation without taking up much room. That’s the real appeal.
The experiment shows how ordinary the hardware inside many commercial systems can be. Remove the restaurant software, install something more useful and the same machine suddenly becomes a compact desktop. It’s not a hidden gaming powerhouse. It’s simply a small, well-built PC that still has something left to offer.
