This new Duke-RT release gives Duke Nukem 3D a stunning graphics upgrade

Real-time path tracing can transform an old game, but it can also bury it under stuttering, noise and uneven performance. Version 0.4.0 tackles those problems directly while adding a new smoke system that gives the lighting far more presence. The game doesn’t just look sharper now. It feels heavier, darker and more physical. The graphics can be genuinely impressive.

CPU performance gets a major lift

The biggest practical improvement comes from the CPU side. In one demanding test scene, frame time dropped from 28 milliseconds to 12 milliseconds. That’s a huge reduction, and players should feel it immediately in more complex areas. Lower CPU frame times mean fewer stalls, steadier movement and less of that awkward hesitation when the engine has to process new geometry or visual data.

Duke-RT now identifies sections of each map more efficiently, which helps the engine cache and reuse information. It also avoids waiting for material data when creating new voxel variants. That sounds technical, but the result is easy to understand: fewer interruptions during play. New objects should appear more smoothly. Busy fights should feel more consistent. Detailed scenes won’t hit the processor quite as hard.

The update also improves GPU ray-tracing performance. That matters because speeding up only one part of the rendering pipeline can simply move the bottleneck somewhere else. the new release takes a broader approach, balancing the workload rather than hiding weak points behind upscaling alone. It’s a smarter update because of that.

Smoke can receive illumination from several sources at once. Firelight can turn it orange. Neon signs can cut through it with strong colour. Dark corridors gain visible depth as light fades through the haze. Instead of floating in front of the scenery, the smoke becomes part of the scene itself. That’s where Duke-RT looks its best.

The mix of pixel art, voxel models, reflective materials and path-traced lighting creates a strange but effective visual style. It still looks like Duke Nukem 3D, yet metal surfaces catch light properly, signs glow across nearby walls and explosions throw colour into the air around them.

The effect isn’t flawless. Smoke can show hard edges when the engine creates a new simulation grid, and the system costs performance. Some of the gains made elsewhere will disappear once a scene fills with heavy volumetric effects. Still, it’s worth seeing.

A cleaner approach to denoising

Version 0.4.0 also removes the REBLUR denoising option. The current implementation could create too much grain, especially in motion. Path tracing naturally produces noisy images, so the denoiser plays a major role in keeping the picture stable. When that process goes wrong, reflections shimmer, shadows crawl and fine detail turns into visual static. Removing an unreliable option makes sense. A slightly softer image often looks better than a sharper one that constantly flickers.

Duke-RT supports both Direct3D 12 and Vulkan, although Direct3D 12 remains the more complete choice. It’s also the preferred option for HDR. The renderer includes support for DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, which can help clean up the image and improve performance on compatible hardware.

The first two episodes currently receive the strongest visual treatment, with updated lighting and physically based materials used throughout many areas. Later content remains less complete, so visual quality can vary depending on where you play.

A meaningful update, not just a new effect

Duke-RT works because its improvements support each other. The engine runs faster. Frame delivery feels steadier. New smoke gives the lighting something physical to interact with, making fires, rockets and neon-lit streets far more convincing. It doesn’t feel like a random visual feature bolted onto the renderer. It changes the presentation.

There are still problems to solve. Level transitions can misbehave, some geometry causes lighting errors and demanding scenes can push performance hard. The smoke system also needs refinement before it blends naturally into every environment.

Even so, this release moves Duke-RT forward in a noticeable way. It’s no longer just an old shooter running with expensive lighting. Version 0.4.0 feels closer to a complete modern rendering project, with better pacing, stronger atmosphere and graphics that look especially good once the smoke starts catching the light.
