
When we reviewed the Command & Conquer fan port for Atari ST, the big surprise was that Westwood’s classic real-time strategy game worked at all. GDI and Nod units moved across a readable 16-colour battlefield, harvesters collected Tiberium, bases grew and battles unfolded on hardware from a very different era. Now developer Jonas Eschenburg is tackling another major part of the original game: its video sequences. The first work in progress footage looks heavily compressed. Colours are scarce, fine detail has disappeared and the image runs at roughly 0.3K resolution. On a modern display, it might resemble one of the worst-encoded videos you’ll see all day. On an Atari ST, it looks remarkably promising.
Why the video sequences matter
Command & Conquer would still be playable without its live-action briefings, but it wouldn’t feel complete. Westwood used video to introduce missions, explain objectives and establish the sharp contrast between the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod. GDI briefings were controlled and military. Nod preferred threats, propaganda and Kane staring straight through the screen. Those scenes gave the campaign its pace.
A mission ended, a briefing started and the next battle suddenly had a purpose. The videos didn’t interrupt the game for long stretches. They delivered the information, added character and sent the player back into action.
That’s why video support matters for this Atari ST conversion. It isn’t just an optional technical extra. It’s one of the features that separates a working strategy engine from a fuller conversion of the original Command & Conquer experience.

Building a video codec for the Atari ST
The developer can’t simply copy the original PC videos and expect the Atari to play them. The DOS release came from the CD-ROM and VGA era. It used hardware with access to 256-colour graphics, faster processors and far more suitable storage. Even then, full-motion video pushed plenty of home computers hard.
The Atari ST port already has a lot to manage. It must draw the map, scroll the battlefield, update the interface, track units, calculate movement, process attacks and keep the player’s economy running. Video playback has to fit into the same limited system without causing everything else to fall apart. That calls for a specialised codec.
Resolution has to drop. The colour palette must shrink to 16 shades, and the encoded data needs to remain simple enough for the Atari to process quickly. Complex compression might produce smaller or cleaner files, but it would be useless if the processor couldn’t decode each frame in time.
The early footage clearly favours speed and recognisability over fine detail. That’s the right place to start. Get the frames moving first. Improve the picture later. A beautiful still image isn’t much use in a mission briefing.
SidecarT shows another way to handle Atari video
The codec also makes an interesting comparison with video playback through SidecarT, where an MD/MJPEG-style format can use modern expansion hardware and microSD storage to support the Atari.
MJPEG treats video as a sequence of individually compressed pictures. It doesn’t depend as heavily on information carried between frames, which can make playback more predictable on limited hardware. The files tend to be larger, but modern removable storage makes that less troublesome than it would have been in the Atari ST’s commercial lifetime.
SidecarT can also take some of the workload away from the computer itself.
The Command & Conquer developer faces a tougher balancing act. His codec has to exist inside a complete game port, sharing memory and processor time with the battlefield, interface, sound and campaign systems. It can’t focus on video alone.
That makes the current results particularly interesting. There’s certainly room for friendly technical competition over who can produce the cleanest 16-colour Atari video, but the two approaches solve different problems. After all, why watch video at 4K in millions of colours when 0.3K and 16 colours can make the hardware work this hard?

One more piece of Command & Conquer falls into place
The Atari ST port already contains the core elements that made Command & Conquer work: Tiberium harvesting, base construction, unit production and fast real-time combat between GDI and Nod. Adding the original video briefings would close one of the most obvious gaps.
There’s still plenty of work ahead. The image quality needs refinement, playback must remain stable and the codec has to perform within the wider demands of the game. Nobody should expect PC-quality footage from an Atari ST. That isn’t the target.
The real achievement will come when Kane appears, delivers the next mission and hands control back to the player without bringing the war to a halt. At that point, the Atari ST port won’t just be running Command & Conquer’s battles. It’ll be delivering the campaign around them too.
