
Analogue Pocket owners can now try one of the handheld’s most requested features: save states for Super Nintendo games. The feature arrives through an experimental build of the openFPGA SNES core, released on 18 July 2026. It lets players pause progress at almost any point, store the current state of the game and return to that exact moment later. That’s a big deal. Plenty of SNES games weren’t designed for quick portable sessions. Some RPGs leave long gaps between save points. Platformers can force players to repeat entire levels after one mistake. Other games rely on passwords that are easy to lose and annoying to enter. Save states cut through those old restrictions. You can stop before a boss fight, close the game and pick things up later without repeating half an hour of progress.
How SNES save states work on Analogue Pocket
A save state doesn’t work like a normal in-game save. Traditional saves only record the information a game was programmed to keep, such as your character’s location, collected items or completed levels. A save state captures the condition of the whole system at a specific moment.
That includes memory, processor activity and other data needed to recreate the scene exactly as you left it. Load the state, and the game should continue from the same frame. You might return halfway through a jump, during a battle or seconds before a difficult section. It’s immediate and flexible. This kind of feature has existed in software emulators for years. On FPGA hardware, though, it takes more work.
Why the feature took time
Analogue Pocket doesn’t run SNES games through a standard software emulator. Its openFPGA system reconfigures the handheld’s programmable hardware to recreate the behaviour of the original console. That can provide accurate timing and low input latency, but it also makes save-state support harder to build.
The developer needs to capture every important part of the recreated system and restore it in the right order. If one element loads incorrectly, the game might freeze, lose sound, display broken graphics or behave unpredictably.
The SNES adds another layer of difficulty because it’s more complicated than many earlier consoles. It uses several processors and specialised components. Some cartridges also include extra hardware designed to improve graphics, sound or performance. Those enhancement chips can make compatibility testing much harder. A save state that works perfectly in one game might fail in another that uses different cartridge hardware.
The build is still experimental
The current release isn’t presented as a finished, stable update. It’s an experimental nightly build, so users should expect a few rough edges. Some games may not restore correctly. Audio might glitch. A state could fail to load. Compatibility may also change between versions as the developer adjusts the core.
Players shouldn’t rely on save states as their only way to protect progress. Keep using normal in-game saves whenever possible, especially in long RPGs or games with battery-backed memory. It’s also sensible to back up important files from the Pocket’s microSD card. A save state can be convenient, but it shouldn’t replace a proper save file.
There’s another point to remember. This feature applies to the openFPGA SNES core. It isn’t a universal Analogue Pocket firmware feature that automatically works with every method of playing SNES games.
Users will need to install the correct experimental core build and make sure the required files are in place. Core updater tools may continue to offer an older stable version until the feature receives wider testing.
A practical upgrade for portable play
Save states won’t change how SNES games look or sound, but they can change how often people play them. The Analogue Pocket is a handheld. That means many owners use it on trains, during lunch breaks or whenever they have ten spare minutes. Original SNES games often expect longer sessions, which doesn’t always suit portable play. Now there’s a simple workaround.
Players can stop during a dungeon, before a difficult jump or halfway through a long level. They don’t need to wait for the next save point or leave the Pocket switched on. Some players will use save states sparingly. Others will save before every dangerous moment. Both approaches work, and the feature doesn’t force anyone to change how they play.
The main question now is compatibility. If testing shows that the system works reliably across standard games and titles with enhancement chips, save states could become one of the most useful additions to the Pocket’s SNES core. For now, it’s an experimental feature with clear potential. SNES games on Analogue Pocket just became much easier to fit into everyday life.
