Wii U emulation on Nintendo Switch takes shape with Cemu-nx

Running Wii U games on a Nintendo Switch sounds like the sort of experiment that belongs in a technical demo. Cemu-nx takes the idea much further. It brings the established Cemu emulator to Nintendo’s hybrid console and wraps it in a launcher designed for controllers, cover art and game-by-game settings. That doesn’t mean every title suddenly runs perfectly. Far from it. This is still an early and demanding port, and performance can change dramatically from one game to another. Yet Cemu-nx already feels more complete than a simple proof of concept. It has a proper interface, broad file support and enough configuration options to make serious testing worthwhile.

More than a basic emulator port

Cemu-nx builds on Cemu’s existing C and C++ code, but moving that software to Switch hardware involves much more than compiling it for a new platform. The developers have added an SDL-based front end that works with a controller, letting users browse games, view cover artwork and adjust settings without dealing with a desktop-style interface. That’s a sensible choice. Nobody wants to operate tiny menus with a virtual mouse while sitting on the sofa.

The launcher also supports individual profiles for each game. One title might need a different graphics pack, another may work better with altered rendering settings, and a third could require its own control layout. Cemu-nx keeps those changes separate, so fixing one game doesn’t risk breaking another. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

Strong support for game formats and storage

The emulator accepts most of the file formats associated with Wii U software, including WUA, WUD, WUX, WUHB, RPX, ELF and ISO. It can also load games from extracted folders, which gives users several ways to organise their library. Cemu-nx doesn’t stop at launching games. It can install and manage updates and downloadable content as well, reducing the amount of manual file work required on a computer.

Storage support looks equally flexible. Games can run from the Switch microSD card, a USB device or an SMB network share. That last option will appeal to anyone who doesn’t want a large Wii U collection eating through limited SD card space. Keep the files on a local server, point the launcher in the right direction and the console can access them over the network. Cover artwork can be added automatically through SteamGridDB integration. It isn’t essential, but it makes a large library much easier to scan on a television or in handheld mode.

Hardware assisted H.264 video decoding

The original Wii U and the Switch use very different hardware designs. Cemu-nx has to translate processor instructions, reproduce graphics behaviour, compile shaders and manage memory within the Switch’s limits. Some games will cope well. Others won’t. Expect variation.

Shader compilation will also cause stutter or pauses when a game runs for the first time. The emulator has to process new effects as they appear, which can interrupt play. Later sessions may feel smoother once those shaders have already been compiled and cached.

Cemu-nx includes hardware assisted H.264 video decoding through Averne and FFmpeg. This helps with games that rely on encoded video for introductions, cut-scenes or background playback, since the console doesn’t have to handle every part of the decoding process through software alone. The emulator also supports both television audio and Wii U GamePad audio. That matters because some games split sound between the main screen and the original controller.

Controls cover the important extras

Basic button mapping wouldn’t be enough for many Wii U games, so Cemu-nx includes controller remapping, vibration, gyro support and multiplayer input. Joy-Con Amiibo scanning is also supported, allowing compatible figures to work through the Switch controllers.

There’s an in-game quick menu too. Players can open it with a controller shortcut and change settings without closing the game completely. That’s especially useful during testing, when one small adjustment can decide whether a title feels playable.

Still, controls will remain one of the trickier parts of compatibility. Wii U games used the GamePad in wildly different ways. Some treated it as a second screen, others relied on touch input, motion sensing or separate audio. Cemu-nx covers many of the basics, but certain games will always present tougher problems than standard controller-driven releases.

Promising, but not ready for everyone

Cemu-nx must run through the Switch Homebrew Menu in full application mode or title-override mode. It won’t work correctly when launched through Album mode, which doesn’t provide enough system resources for demanding applications.

Installation also requires users to place the emulator files and the necessary keys in the correct folders on the SD card. This isn’t difficult for experienced homebrew users, but it isn’t a one-click setup either.

The main issue remains performance. Switch hardware has limited headroom, and Wii U emulation asks a lot from the system. Frame rates, loading behaviour and graphical accuracy will depend on the game and the chosen settings.

Even with those limits, Cemu-nx makes a strong first impression. The launcher feels considered, the format support is broad and the control options cover far more than the basics. It’s not a replacement for running Cemu on a capable PC, and it doesn’t pretend to be.

What it does offer is clear: a serious, self-contained attempt to run Wii U software directly on Nintendo Switch hardware. For experienced homebrew users who enjoy testing ambitious software, that’s already enough to make Cemu-nx worth watching.
