
Unreal CGA takes one of the defining PC shooters of the late 1990s and asks a wonderfully odd question: what would it look like on a computer that could barely display the original title screen? The answer isn’t a crippled first-person shooter. That would’ve been the obvious route, and probably the wrong one. Instead, Unreal CGA turns Epic MegaGames’ 1998 hit into a 320 x 200 adventure game for MS-DOS, complete with four-colour CGA graphics, pre-rendered scenes, text-based exploration and video-style transitions. It’s built for a 286-class PC with just 1 MB of RAM. Yes, really. That sounds like a joke project at first. It isn’t. The design sticks closely to what the hardware can handle, while still finding a way to recreate the scale, atmosphere and strange alien landscapes that made Unreal stand out in the first place.
From first-person shooter to graphic adventure
The original Unreal arrived in 1998, developed by Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes and published by GT Interactive. At the time, it looked far ahead of most PC games. Large outdoor areas, coloured lighting, reflective surfaces and towering alien structures gave it a sense of scale that few shooters could match.
It also introduced the first version of Unreal Engine. That technology later grew into one of the most widely used game engines in the industry, but the first Unreal wasn’t just a technical showcase. It had a clear identity of its own.
Players took the role of Prisoner 849, a survivor aboard the Vortex Rikers prison ship. After the vessel crashes on the planet Na Pali, the prisoner escapes into a world occupied by the Skaarj, an aggressive alien species that has enslaved the native Nali population.
The journey moves through mines, villages, temples, laboratories and huge alien installations. Much of the story comes through logs and environmental details rather than long cutscenes. You piece things together while trying to survive. Unreal CGA keeps that basic journey, but changes almost everything about how it plays.
Instead of running through live 3D environments, players move between prepared scenes. The structure feels closer to The 7th Guest or Riven than Doom or Quake. Locations appear as carefully composed CGA images, while movement and major transitions play out through pre-rendered sequences. It’s not Unreal with fewer colours. It’s Unreal rebuilt for another genre.
A 286 can run it, but storage gets complicated
The processor requirements are surprisingly low. Unreal CGA targets a 286 running at around 10 MHz, with 1 MB of memory and a graphics adapter that supports the correct BIOS video mode. You don’t need a genuine IBM CGA card. EGA, VGA and SVGA cards should also support the required display mode, although unusual hardware combinations may still cause problems.
The real shock comes from the storage requirements. Unreal CGA needs around 4.2 GB of free space on a single partition. That’s huge for a DOS game aimed at a 286. Most of that space goes towards pre-rendered visual material and video-style sequences, which allow the game to show movement and location changes without asking the processor to generate complex graphics in real time.
This also rules out a standard MS-DOS 6.22 setup. FAT16 partitions under that operating system can’t exceed 2 GB, so the game needs DOS 7.1 or FreeDOS 1.4 with FAT32 support. There’s another requirement. Unreal CGA checks for an installed copy of the original Unreal each time it starts. The original game files must sit on the hard drive, whether you’re playing through DOSBox or using physical hardware. The program reads those files but doesn’t change them. Your Unreal installation stays intact.
Four colours change how every scene works
CGA graphics look harsh on a large modern display. At 320 x 200, every pixel becomes obvious, and stretching the picture across a 27-inch monitor doesn’t do it many favours. A smaller screen works better. A 14- or 15-inch CRT suits the game particularly well because the softer image blends the limited colours and reduces the blocky appearance.
Still, the visuals aren’t just a filter slapped over screenshots. The four-colour limit shapes every scene. Artists have to rely on contrast, silhouettes, patterns and clear composition. Familiar locations from Unreal become simpler, but they remain recognisable. That’s where the project works best. It doesn’t pretend CGA can reproduce the original game’s lighting or detailed 3D environments. It finds another visual language instead.
A complete experiment with a clear ending
Unreal CGA is presented as a finished release. There are no planned expansions, major updates or extra chapters. That makes sense. The project has a specific goal, and it reaches it. It isn’t trying to replace the 1998 game or recreate every weapon and combat encounter. It shows what happens when you take Unreal’s world, story and locations, then rebuild them around the limits of early DOS hardware.
The strangest detail remains the contrast between the tiny system requirements and the massive installation size. A four-colour game for a 286 that needs more than 4 GB of storage sounds completely backwards. Yet the design holds together.
By dropping real-time shooting and switching to an adventure format, Unreal CGA avoids becoming a weak imitation. It becomes its own game, with a clear technical identity and a surprisingly practical approach to impossible hardware.
