New Snes9x update improves SuperFX, audio and Super Game Boy support

The new update of Snes9x isn’t just another small emulator update. This release adds full support for the Super Famicom Box, improves the audio viewer, fixes several Super Game Boy issues and makes Libretro builds more reliable. The Super Famicom Box is the big story here. It was a commercial Nintendo system installed in hotels, and it worked very differently from a normal home console. Guests could choose games through a dedicated menu, insert coins and play for a limited amount of time. Snes9x now emulates that entire setup.

The Super Famicom Box finally works as a complete system

Earlier emulator support could focus on individual games, but the Super Famicom Box needs much more than that. It has its own BIOS, menu system, payment controls, supervisor hardware and display functions. Version 1.63.26 brings those parts together.

The emulator can boot the KROM 1.00 BIOS, show the original attraction menu and launch compatible games. Tested titles include Super Mario Kart, Super Donkey Kong and Star Fox. It also supports two-cartridge PSS images, which match the multi-game configuration used by the original hardware.

That’s a major technical step. The hotel unit didn’t simply contain a regular Super Famicom connected to a timer. It used extra processors and control hardware to manage game selection, payments and system access. Snes9x now recreates those systems in software.

A new processor core handles the supervisor hardware

The update adds a new HD64180 processor core, also known as the Z180. This chip powered the supervisor board that controlled the Super Famicom Box interface. It doesn’t run the games themselves. Instead, it handles the system around them.

The new core supports the documented Z80 instruction set, along with Z180 features such as memory management, timers and interrupt handling. That gives the emulator what it needs to boot the BIOS and operate the menu correctly.

Snes9x also emulates the board’s custom input and output ports, real-time clock, controller latches, coin switch, keyswitch, watchdog system and battery-backed memory. The emulator saves that persistent data in a .box file. There’s support for the on-screen display hardware too. The menu now renders with the correct character data, background colours and full-resolution output.

SuperFX games work inside the menu system

The Super Famicom Box could run games with extra chips, and Snes9x now handles that switching properly. Star Fox is the clearest example. The game uses the SuperFX chip for its polygon graphics, while the hotel system’s BIOS still needs control of the machine before and after gameplay.

Snes9x dynamically enables and disables the SuperFX hardware as the BIOS moves between the menu and the game. That means Star Fox can launch from the hotel interface and run with its full 3D graphics intact. Super Mario Kart also works with DSP-1 support.

These details matter because the supervisor system and cartridge hardware can’t simply stay active at the same time without coordination. The emulator now manages that relationship automatically.

New controls make the system easy to operate

The Super Famicom Box needs controls that don’t exist on a normal gamepad. Snes9x adds them directly to the interface. A new section in the Hacks dialogue includes all five keyswitch positions and an Insert Coin button. You’ll see these options when a Super Famicom Box image is loaded.

You can also assign hotkeys for coin insertion and keyswitch settings. On-screen messages confirm each change, so you don’t have to guess whether the input worked. The emulator saves these settings too.

Save states now capture the complete supervisor environment, not just the game. That includes processor data, clock information, control latches and display state. You can resume from the menu, from a running game or from a title using SuperFX hardware. There’s also an optional English display layer. It translates around 110 Japanese menu phrases, including countdown warnings and continuation screens, without modifying the original BIOS.

The audio viewer now feels much more practical

The update also gives the waveform viewer a major redesign. Audio sources now appear in separate track rows, similar to the layout you’d find in audio editing software. The viewer groups SPC sound, Game Boy sound and the final mix, making it easier to see what each part of the system is doing.

You can expand individual SPC voices and Game Boy channels, then mute or solo them separately. That separation fixes an old limitation. Game Boy channels now use their own mute mask, so muting one no longer silences the matching SPC voice by accident.

Solo controls work across both audio systems. Mute still takes priority, and temporary solo settings clear when you close the viewer or load something else. The Sound menu also gains direct control over the Game Boy audio processor. In Game Boy mode, the four channel controls map to the two pulse channels, the wave channel and the noise channel.

Smaller fixes round out the release

Frame advance and fast-forward now mute Game Boy audio cleanly. This stops delayed sound bursts and distortion when normal playback resumes. Windows users can keep the S-PPU viewer open during Super Game Boy BIOS operation, where the SNES graphics hardware remains active.

Libretro users get a safer default SuperFX clock multiplier as well. When a front end doesn’t provide the relevant option, Snes9x now uses a value of 100. That prevents SuperFX games from freezing in simpler setups.

The update focuses on specialised hardware, but the benefits reach beyond one unusual Nintendo system. The release improves audio inspection, save states, Super Game Boy behaviour and front-end compatibility. It’s a technical update, but it also makes the emulator easier to use.
