ModRetro M64 launches with 4K output and 67% overclocking

The ModRetro M64 arrives on 28 July 2026, and it’s aiming to do more than simply run Nintendo 64 cartridges on a modern television. At its core, the machine uses FPGA hardware to reproduce the original console’s behaviour while adding features that make sense for current displays and accessories. That means native cartridge support, compatibility with original controllers, automatic resolution switching and a set of display options designed for everything from living-room televisions to capture setups. There’s also overclocking. That feature will attract plenty of attention, especially because the highest setting promises a performance boost of up to 67%. It won’t magically fix every slow game, but it could make some of the Nintendo 64’s more demanding titles run with fewer frame-rate drops. 

The launch software gets the basics right

Updating the M64 should be straightforward. Owners can install firmware through Wi-Fi, USB storage or an SD card, so they won’t have to rely on one specific method. That’s useful.

A console like this will depend heavily on software updates, especially during its first few months on the market. Cartridge compatibility, controller behaviour and display handling can all improve over time, and offering several update routes removes a lot of unnecessary hassle.

The video options are also broader than you might expect. Users can choose from Scanlines, CRT, Clean and Custom profiles, with extra effects such as Bloom and Deblur available for finer control. You don’t have to adjust everything manually.

The console can detect the connected display and choose between 4K, 1440p, 1080p and 720p. That should help when moving the M64 between a television, monitor or capture device. Anyone who wants tighter control can still create a manual setup. Controller support looks sensible from the start. The M64 works with the new M64 Pro controller, original Nintendo 64 pads, the 8BitDo 64 and the wired Hyperkin Captain+.

Flash-cartridge support is part of the launch package too. Both EverDrive and Summercart devices appear on the compatibility list, which will matter to developers, testers and players using legally backed-up game libraries.

The M64 Pro controller works beyond the console

The M64 Pro isn’t locked to one machine. It supports wired rumble, joystick calibration and firmware updates over USB. Bluetooth connectivity also lets it work with Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, turning it into a controller you can use across several devices.

That flexibility matters more than it sounds. Nobody wants to buy another gamepad that spends most of its life in a drawer. ModRetro also plans to let users update the controller directly through the M64 in a future update. That isn’t available at launch, but it should make maintenance easier once the feature arrives.

A launch-day update adds experimental overclocking

The first firmware update lands alongside the console and addresses several specific problems. It targets frame-rate issues in demanding games, fixes multiplayer problems in Star Fox 64 and Jeopardy, and adds proper save support for the EverDrive X5. That last fix is particularly useful because the cartridge depends on reset behaviour to write save data correctly.

The big addition is experimental overclocking. Users can leave it switched off or choose between Super, Ultra, Extreme and Insane modes. Those settings represent performance boosts of 16, 33, 50 and 67 per cent. The numbers sound impressive, but they need context.

A 67 per cent overclock doesn’t guarantee a 67 per cent frame-rate increase. Nintendo 64 games often tie their logic, animation or timing to the original hardware, so pushing the system harder may produce mixed results. Some titles could run more smoothly. Others may behave strangely. That’s why several levels make sense. You can try a modest boost first, then increase it only when a game benefits.

Save states and notifications will arrive later

ModRetro plans to add save states after launch, but it hasn’t confirmed a release date. The same applies to system notifications. Once added, these should cover useful messages such as low controller batteries, available firmware updates, Wi-Fi interruptions and accessory changes.

They’re small features, yet they can make the console feel much easier to live with. Virtual Controller Pak support is also coming later. Until then, games that save through a Controller Pak rather than directly to the cartridge may still need original or compatible hardware. That’s one of the M64’s clearest launch limitations.

Chromatic support could add something different

Future updates will connect the M64 with ModRetro’s Chromatic handheld, which runs Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. One planned feature will send the Chromatic’s video through the M64 to a television. Another will let the handheld work as a Transfer Pak, opening the door to communication between compatible Game Boy and Nintendo 64 games.

Pokémon Stadium is the obvious example. It’s a clever use of two separate products, though it remains part of the roadmap rather than the launch package. Buyers shouldn’t assume it’ll be available immediately.

A strong start, with a few missing pieces

The M64 launches with a solid set of practical features. It supports original cartridges, several controllers, modern resolutions, flash cartridges and multiple firmware-update methods. The adjustable overclocking system also gives it something that many rival devices don’t offer. Still, the unfinished features matter.

Save states, virtual Controller Paks and Chromatic integration could improve the experience considerably, but none of them has a confirmed release date. It’s best to treat them as planned extras rather than guaranteed launch benefits.

Even without those additions, the M64 already has a clear purpose. It takes original Nintendo 64 software and makes it easier to use on current hardware, without forcing players to depend on old video connections or a single controller option. That’s the real appeal. It doesn’t try to reinvent the Nintendo 64. It simply gives the system a more practical place in a modern setup.
