New Mega M.I.L.V. gameplay pushes the Amiga 1200 to its limits

A stock Amiga 1200 under pressure

Daytona675x is leading development under the GoldenCode name, and the project has been built around original Amiga 1200 hardware from the start. That decision shapes everything, from the number of moving objects to the way the engine handles graphics and collision detection.

The machine has plenty to do. It needs to scroll the playfield, move enemies, animate weapons, process controls and track a huge number of bullets. Add a second player and the workload rises again.

The engine uses interrupt-driven blitting to keep graphics operations moving efficiently. On screen, that translates into stable action and projectile patterns that don’t vanish into flicker when things get crowded.

You don’t need to know the programming details to see the result. The game moves quickly, the bullets stay visible and the screen rarely looks like it’s losing control. That matters more than any headline number.

Two players, one very crowded screen

The simultaneous two-player mode puts even more strain on the engine. Two ships mean extra movement, extra weapons, more collisions and twice as much player activity to follow. It could easily become unreadable.

Instead, both ships remain clear against the incoming fire, while enemy attacks continue to spread across the screen in organised patterns. The footage doesn’t reveal the full structure of the two-player mode yet, but it does show both players active at the same time without the game cutting back on the number of bullets. That’s no small achievement on the target hardware.

With two ships on screen, the playfield becomes even more hectic. Both players weave through the incoming fire while filling the upper half of the screen with shots of their own. Enemies appear in groups, fire off structured patterns and leave only brief openings before the next wave arrives.

It’s less about racing from one side of the screen to the other and more about small, controlled movements. A few pixels can make the difference between slipping through a pattern and flying straight into it.

The footage also suggests that enemy fire has been designed to remain readable. Even when the screen fills up, the bullets don’t simply look random. You can see the shape of the attack, spot the safer areas and react before the pattern closes in. That gives the game a sharper, more deliberate feel than a simple technical demonstration.

The team behind Mega M.I.L.V.

Daytona675x handles the main development work through GoldenCode, but Mega M.I.L.V. isn’t being built alone. Triace is responsible for audio design, while the graphics team includes Matt Walkden, Pieterator, Crome and Tom.

Some of the artwork in the current build remains temporary, which makes sense at this stage. The engine and core gameplay systems are already doing the heavy lifting, while the presentation continues to take shape around them.

The project also uses Frank Wille’s music player, with Bartman^Abyss’s Visual Studio Code development system supporting the production process. Those tools won’t be visible when the game is finished, but they help make a project this demanding easier to test, adjust and optimise.

The stages are starting to take shape

The first level is close to completion, while the second and third stages are around halfway through development. That means the project has moved well beyond the point of simply proving that the engine can put hundreds of bullets on screen. Now it needs content.

More enemy formations, stronger visual variety, finished graphics and a steady flow of new attack patterns will decide how the full game feels. The latest update also includes bug fixes, performance work and general gameplay improvements, all of which are essential for a shooter where precise movement sits at the centre of the experience. A small slowdown might go unnoticed in another type of game. Here, it could throw off the entire rhythm of an attack.

More than a hardware demonstration

Mega M.I.L.V. already looks technically impressive, but the more important point is that the technology appears to support the action rather than overshadow it. The bullets form recognisable patterns. The controls look responsive. The two-player mode runs without turning the screen into a flickering mess.

There’s still no confirmed release date, and several parts of the game remain unfinished. Even so, the core engine looks solid enough for the team to concentrate on the stages, graphics, sound and final balance. The Amiga 1200 has handled plenty of shooters over the years. Mega M.I.L.V. is asking it to handle a very different kind of one. Right now, it looks ready for the challenge.
