Working Mario 64 port brings Nintendo’s classic to Sega Saturn

Mario 64 on the Sega Saturn shouldn’t really work. The two consoles handle 3D graphics in very different ways, and Nintendo built the original game around hardware that Sega’s machine simply doesn’t have. Yet here we are. An early version of Mario 64 is running on a Sega Saturn, with analogue movement, working stars, familiar levels, enemies, music and a fully 3D Mario. It’s rough. Very rough. Mario falls through floors, the camera loses its mind and the frame rate jumps around constantly. Even so, this isn’t just a video mock-up or an emulator experiment. The code runs on real hardware, and at its best, it reaches around 30 frames per second.

The port mixes several different projects

This isn’t a straightforward conversion of the Nintendo 64 game. Instead, the developer has combined parts from several earlier projects. Some of the level assets come from work previously done on a 3DO version. The Saturn build also uses a modified version of the Powerslave engine, while a number of elements were carried across from a PlayStation project. That mixture explains why the game can look surprisingly convincing one moment and completely fall apart the next.

Mario himself comes from the Super Mario 64 decompilation. His model, animations and sound effects all draw from that work, although the animation set has been heavily reduced to fit the current build.

The result still feels much closer to the original than the earlier sprite-based version. Mario has a proper 3D body, recognisable movement and familiar poses, even if his face occasionally looks a little strange.

It can hit 30fps, but not consistently

The most interesting part is simple: this runs on a real Sega Saturn. In smaller or less demanding areas, the game can move at close to 30fps. That doesn’t happen all the time, of course. Large stages put far more pressure on the system, and performance can drop quickly when the engine has to render more geometry. The castle courtyard works particularly well. Interior hallways and the rear patio also appear more stable than the outdoor stages, mainly because the Saturn has less scenery to process.

Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp’s Fortress and Cool, Cool Mountain all load, but they expose the current limits. Objects disappear at short distances, walls don’t always behave correctly and Mario regularly drops through the ground. Sometimes he falls slowly. Sometimes he launches through the map at absurd speed.

Analogue control makes a big difference

The port supports the Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad, so Mario can move with analogue input rather than simple digital directions. That matters. A lot. You can walk slowly, speed up, turn towards or away from the camera and strafe left or right. The control system mixes free movement with a touch of tank-style steering, which sounds awkward but actually suits the Saturn hardware reasonably well.

Third-person movement currently limits Mario to around 60 per cent of his normal speed. Switch to first-person mode and that restriction disappears. Then things get wild. Mario can move at what feels like Sonic speed, tearing through levels far faster than the collision system can reliably handle. First-person mode also improves performance in some areas because the engine doesn’t need to display Mario’s full model on screen. It’s faster, but much less safe.

Stars, warps and enemies already work

This isn’t just a technical scene where you can walk around an empty room. Stars work. Warps work. Several stages load. Enemies appear and react to Mario, although they currently use sprites instead of full 3D models.

The enemy behaviour comes from systems linked to the Powerslave engine. They can chase Mario and push him, but they can’t deal proper damage yet. That doesn’t make them harmless. Because the collision system still has major gaps, an enemy can shove Mario straight through a wall or floor. In some cases, being pushed out of the level is more dangerous than being attacked. The game also includes the original Mario 64 skybox, which helps outdoor areas look much closer to the Nintendo 64 version.

CD audio gives the Saturn an advantage

The Saturn’s CD format gives this port one clear benefit: audio space. Music can play back at CD quality, allowing the game to use cleaner and less compressed versions of the Mario 64 soundtrack. The current build mainly includes the castle theme and Bob-omb Battlefield music, along with familiar sound effects.

The Nintendo 64 could produce excellent audio, but cartridge storage placed strict limits on how much high-quality music developers could include. On the Saturn, that’s less of a problem. Still, sound isn’t the biggest challenge here.

The developer has to fix collision detection, camera movement, wall angles, draw distance and level stability. Since the project combines technology from several platforms, changing one part can easily break another. That’s the real battle.

There’s a playable game hiding underneath

No one would mistake this for a finished Saturn release. It crashes, stutters and regularly sends Mario into places he was never meant to go. But the foundation works. The Saturn can render recognisable Mario 64 environments, animate a 3D character, process analogue controls, display enemies, load different stages and play CD-quality music at the same time.

That’s already a serious technical achievement. With enough optimisation, tighter collision and smarter level design, the project could become genuinely playable. It probably won’t match the Nintendo 64 version exactly, and it’ll need compromises in draw distance and geometry. Even so, the important part is already clear. Mario 64 runs on a Sega Saturn. And every now and then, it runs surprisingly well.
