
Last week, we reported on the first playable native OpenTTD port for AmigaOS 3.x. The project already stood out because it brought a demanding transport simulation to real 68k hardware without turning the whole thing into a stripped-down curiosity. Now the port has taken another useful step. OpenTTD 1.1.0 keeps the internet multiplayer introduced in version 1.0.0, preserves compatibility between both releases and adds a native Workbench window mode. The windowed display will attract plenty of attention, but the bigger story is what the networking support means in practice: Amiga users can build, compete and manage the same transport world together, even when the other players are using Windows systems. That changes the experience completely.
Multiplayer is now a central part of the port
OpenTTD has always worked best when several players share one map. One company might build a dense railway network between industrial centres, while another focuses on passengers, aircraft or road transport. Players can compete for the same towns and industries, cooperate on connected routes or simply watch each other create increasingly complicated junctions. The Amiga port brings that experience to 68k machines.
Version 1.0.0 introduced working internet multiplayer, access to the public server list, server registration and support for current invite codes. These features make it possible to find games, join remote servers and host sessions without relying only on local network connections.
For a classic Amiga port, that’s a significant technical achievement. Multiplayer isn’t being simulated through a separate wrapper or limited to an isolated Amiga-only build. The port uses the same game code as its accompanying Windows version, allowing both platforms to join the same session. An Amiga can play alongside a modern PC.
Version compatibility keeps games running
OpenTTD 1.1.0 remains network-compatible with version 1.0.0. Players using the earlier release can connect to a 1.1.0 server, while version 1.1.0 clients can also join servers running 1.0.0. Nobody has to update every machine at the same moment.
This is especially useful for long-running games. OpenTTD maps can continue for days, weeks or even longer, depending on how often the group plays. A forced upgrade could split an active session or leave one machine unable to reconnect. By keeping both releases compatible, the port avoids that problem.
Joining a public or private server should work through a standard internet connection. Hosting requires TCP port 3979 to be reachable, so the person running the server may need to configure port forwarding on the router.
Once connected, the game follows the familiar OpenTTD multiplayer structure. Each player can manage a separate company, share control where the server settings allow it, or compete for profitable routes and valuable industry connections.
Why OpenTTD works so well with other players
OpenTTD is an open-source transport management game based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe. You build railways, bus routes, shipping lines and air services, then try to turn them into a profitable network. The basics are simple. The consequences aren’t.
A rival company may reach a productive coal mine before you do. Another player might build a faster passenger connection between two growing cities. A shared junction can become congested because one company keeps adding trains. Even a friendly cooperative game can turn into a complicated planning exercise once several people start building around the same towns. Multiplayer makes every map less predictable.
You’re no longer solving only the problems created by the simulation. You’re reacting to other people’s decisions, rebuilding routes when space disappears and looking for opportunities they missed. A railway line that seemed unnecessary ten minutes ago may suddenly become essential because another company has changed the local economy. That’s where the game becomes especially engaging.
Windowed play helps during long online sessions
Version 1.1.0 also introduces a resizable Intuition window on the Workbench. OpenTTD can now run beside system monitors, communication software and other Amiga applications instead of always taking over a separate display. This fits multiplayer particularly well.
Players often need to check connection details, monitor system performance or communicate outside the game during a long session. Windowed mode makes that far easier. The interface automatically adjusts when the window changes size, and the port remembers separate settings for fullscreen and windowed play. Fullscreen remains the default.
A stronger networked Amiga release
The Amiga version is based on OpenTTD 1.0.5 and supports AGA, OCS or ECS in Extra Half-Brite mode, and RTG graphics systems. It requires at least a 68020 processor and 24 MB of Fast RAM, though faster processors are better suited to busy multiplayer maps.
Version 1.1.0 doesn’t transform the networking system introduced in the previous release. Instead, it strengthens the complete package around it. Compatibility remains intact, Windows server support reduces the burden on classic hardware, and windowed Workbench operation makes long online sessions easier to manage. The result feels practical rather than experimental.
OpenTTD on 68k Amigas now offers more than a technically impressive single-player port. It provides a working cross-platform multiplayer game that can connect classic machines and modern PCs inside the same living transport network.
