
A native PSP version of Star Fox 64 is starting to look like a proper game rather than a technical demo. Developer Daniel Welch has confirmed that the Nintendo 64 classic now runs at almost full speed on original PSP hardware. There’s one catch. Sound is currently disabled. That compromise gives the game more processing power and helps it reach higher frame rates, but it’s still a major step forward.
This isn’t ordinary emulation
The project uses work from the Star Fox 64 decompilation and the existing PC port. Decompilation projects convert the original game code into a form that modern systems can compile and run. It’s still a demanding process, but it removes much of the overhead that comes with traditional emulation.
For the PSP, that’s a big deal. The handheld has limited memory, an ageing processor and a graphics system that works very differently from the Nintendo 64. Every part of the game needs attention, from rendering and audio to controls, timing and memory use.
Performance comes first
At this stage, Welch is focusing on speed and stability. Turning off sound frees up resources, allowing the PSP to concentrate on game logic and graphics. Audio can return later, once the main systems run consistently. The current roadmap suggests that the PSP’s Media Engine may eventually handle some of the sound processing. That could reduce pressure on the main processor.
Graphics optimisation is another key part of the work. The project currently uses PSPGL, a graphics layer that helps translate rendering commands for the handheld. A future version may move to Sony’s native sceGu graphics library, giving the port more direct control over the PSP’s GPU.
Direct control usually means better performance, but it also means more work. The developer must manage many low-level tasks that a higher-level graphics system would normally handle automatically.
The project could support other ports
This isn’t only about getting one game running. Welch is also building the port as a technical framework for future Nintendo 64 conversions. The code and tools developed here could help other projects deal with familiar problems, including graphics translation, controller input, audio processing and memory limits.
That won’t make future ports simple. Every Nintendo 64 game uses the hardware differently, and some will be far harder to convert than others. Still, a working foundation could save developers from solving the same basic problems repeatedly.
The project may also experiment with the PSP’s Virtual Mobile Engine. This secondary processor can assist with certain tasks when developers use it carefully. It won’t magically double performance, but it could help move work away from the main CPU.
Why Star Fox 64 suits the PSP
Star Fox 64 arrived in Europe as Lylat Wars in October 1997. It quickly became one of the Nintendo 64’s most recognisable action games. Players control Fox McCloud as he leads the Star Fox team across the Lylat system. Most missions take place in the Arwing fighter, with the action moving forward at high speed while enemies attack from every direction.
Some stages open into larger battlefields. These All-Range Mode sections let players fly freely through a 360-degree arena while fighting enemy ships and bosses. The campaign also includes the Landmaster tank and Blue Marine submarine. That variety keeps the game moving, even though a single playthrough is relatively short.
Its branching mission system gives it staying power. Completing hidden objectives or performing well can open different routes through the campaign. Players may reach new planets, face alternate bosses or follow a more difficult path towards the final battle.
That structure fits handheld play nicely. Missions are short, controls are direct, and the game doesn’t need hours of uninterrupted attention. You can finish a stage, put the PSP into sleep mode and return later.
The original game also helped popularise the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak. The PSP doesn’t support rumble, and its single analogue stick creates some control challenges, but the core shooting mechanics remain a strong match for the system.
A beta build is getting closer
The next major milestone should be a public beta. Before that happens, the port still needs reliable audio, accurate graphics, stable controls and consistent performance across every stage. Running one section well is encouraging, but the full campaign will test the hardware in different ways.
Even so, the project has already proved its main point. Star Fox 64 can run close to full speed on a standard PSP through native code and hardware-specific optimisation. That’s an impressive result.
And while the final version isn’t ready yet, the port already looks like more than a one-off experiment. It could become a useful starting point for developers who want to bring other Nintendo 64 games to Sony’s handheld.
