This incredible mod turns Baldur’s Gate 3 into a third-person RPG

Baldur’s Gate 3 gives players plenty of control over the camera, but it still feels like a traditional computer RPG. You usually watch the action from above, pulling back when fights get busy and moving closer when you want a better look at the scenery. It works well. Still, some players have wanted something more direct. The True Third-Person Camera mod does exactly that. Created by modder Relysia, it moves the camera down behind your chosen character and gives the game a familiar over-the-shoulder view. Instead of guiding the party from a distance, you walk through streets, forests, ruins and underground areas with the camera sitting close to your character’s back. It’s a simple idea. The effect isn’t.

A much closer look at Faerûn

Baldur’s Gate 3 has an impressive amount of environmental detail, but the standard camera doesn’t always put that detail front and centre. You can zoom in, of course, though the game still feels designed around a higher viewpoint. This mod changes that immediately.

When the camera sits at shoulder height, buildings feel taller, paths seem narrower and crowded interiors become more enclosed. You also get a clearer sense of your character’s size compared with doors, furniture and other people. Walking through Baldur’s Gate itself feels noticeably different when you’re looking down the street rather than hovering above it.

The camera adjusts to different character heights, so it doesn’t treat every party member as though they have the same body type. It also lowers smoothly when your character crouches. Start running and the field of view widens, adding a stronger sense of movement without turning the game into an action title. None of these features sounds dramatic on its own. Together, though, they make the new camera feel far more convincing.

It knows when to pull back

A close third-person view works well for exploration, but Baldur’s Gate 3 wasn’t built around it. Combat needs a wider view. So does spell placement, jumping and selecting small objects in busy environments. The mod handles this by switching back to the game’s regular camera when you need more visibility.

Enter combat and the view pulls away, giving you room to inspect the battlefield and position the party. Once the fight ends, the camera returns behind your character. Similar changes happen when you target spells, examine objects or prepare a jump.

That decision matters. A mod that forced the close camera into every situation would quickly become frustrating. Baldur’s Gate 3 often asks you to think about height, distance, hazards and enemy placement. You need to see the whole area, not just the space directly ahead. By moving between viewpoints, the mod keeps exploration personal without getting in the way of the game’s tactical systems.

Controller support makes a big difference

The third-person setup makes the most sense when paired with direct character movement. Controller users already have that style of control, so the mod fits naturally with a gamepad. Players can activate the camera by holding Y on an Xbox controller or Triangle on a PlayStation controller. Keyboard users can toggle it with the Numpad asterisk, and the key can be changed through the configuration options.

Mouse-and-keyboard players may also want to install a separate WASD movement mod. Point-and-click controls still work, but they can feel awkward with the camera locked behind the character. Direct movement makes the whole setup feel closer to a modern third-person RPG.

It won’t turn Baldur’s Gate 3 into The Witcher 3 or Dragon Age. The combat, interface and party controls remain unchanged. You’re still playing Larian’s turn-based RPG. You’re simply viewing it from a different angle.

Plenty of room for adjustment

The mod includes controls for camera height, distance, field of view, character offset and tracking speed. That flexibility helps because Baldur’s Gate 3 has cramped rooms, open landscapes and party members of very different sizes.

Some players will prefer the camera tight behind the character. Others may want it slightly higher and farther back. You can also adjust how quickly it follows sideways movement. A slower setting creates smoother camera motion, while a faster setting keeps the view firmly attached to every change in direction.

Installation takes more effort than downloading something from the official in-game mod menu. The mod requires several external tools, including Native Mod Loader, Script Extender and Mod Configuration Menu. Players must also place files in the correct game folders and activate the setup through BG3 Mod Manager. That makes it better suited to experienced PC mod users.

Not perfect, but surprisingly effective

The mod still has a few rough edges. Certain camera inputs can occasionally leave the view stuck, although the configuration menu includes a recovery option. The close camera may also behave strangely when one party member enters combat while another remains elsewhere. Those problems aren’t unexpected. Baldur’s Gate 3 constantly switches between characters, modes and camera states, so adding a permanent shoulder-level view was never going to be effortless.

Even so, True Third-Person Camera changes the feel of exploration far more than you might expect. The game itself stays the same, but the world feels closer, larger and easier to appreciate at ground level. For PC players who’ve always wanted to experience Baldur’s Gate 3 from behind their character, this mod delivers a convincing alternative.
