
People often describe the Amiga as an arcade-quality home computer. In Arcadia Systems’ case, that wasn’t marketing talk. The Amiga really did end up inside arcade cabinets, taking coins and running games from ROM boards. Arcadia’s Super Select System used an Amiga 500 motherboard as its core. The company added arcade controls, coin-handling hardware, diagnostics and a multi-game system that could support as many as ten titles in one cabinet. It sounds like an obvious idea now. At the time, it was anything but. This wasn’t simply an Amiga placed in a cabinet with a joystick wired to it. Arcadia rebuilt the machine for commercial use. Players never saw Workbench, a keyboard or a floppy disk. They saw a game menu, arcade controls and a coin slot. Behind the screen, though, an A500 was doing the work.
From a conversion kit to ten games in one cabinet
Arcadia’s first system arrived in 1987 as the Horizontal Conversion Kit. It was designed for operators who already owned an arcade cabinet with a horizontal monitor. The kit included the main boards, wiring, controls and cabinet artwork. It supported one game at a time, so it worked much like a normal arcade conversion. An operator could take an existing cabinet, install the Arcadia hardware and turn it into a new machine without buying a complete cabinet from scratch. That was only the beginning.
In 1988, Arcadia introduced the Super Select System. This was the more interesting setup, because it could hold up to ten games at once. Players chose a title from an on-screen menu, and the cabinet rotated through game demonstrations when nobody was playing.
One machine could offer shooters, sports games, action titles and two-player competition. For an arcade operator, that meant more choice without filling the floor with ten separate cabinets. The idea wasn’t unique. Nintendo had already explored multi-game cabinets with the PlayChoice-10, and SNK later turned interchangeable games into a major selling point with the Neo Geo MVS. Arcadia’s approach was different, though. It used home-computer hardware as the base.
The Amiga 500 at its core
At the centre of the Super Select System sat an Amiga 500 motherboard. That gave Arcadia a Motorola 68000 processor, Commodore’s custom graphics chips and the Amiga’s familiar sampled sound hardware. Arcadia then added the parts needed for arcade use.
The setup included a JAMMA interface, an audio and coin board, a side-expansion adapter and plug-in game boards. JAMMA support mattered because it made the system easier to connect to standard arcade cabinets, controls and power supplies. Each game came on what Arcadia called a Mega Board. These boards could contain up to 1MB of ROM.
There were no floppy disks to insert and no loading screens from a drive. The cabinet started directly into its control software and loaded the selected game from ROM. To change the line-up, an operator could remove one Mega Board and install another.
That made the system far more practical than a normal computer conversion. Arcadia’s own control software handled the rest. The single-game setup used a program called OnePlay. The ten-game system used TenPlay.
TenPlay checked the installed slots, confirmed which games were present and reported problems such as checksum or header errors. It could also test joysticks, buttons and coin mechanisms. The cabinet even included display test patterns, so operators could adjust colour, brightness and screen geometry without connecting extra equipment. This wasn’t an improvised setup. Arcadia had clearly thought about what happened after the cabinet reached an arcade floor.
The games available for the Arcadia system
Arcadia built a surprisingly varied catalogue for the hardware. There were shooters. Xenon is probably the best-known name in the group, but the line-up also included Sidewinder, Zeta Force, X Soldier and Space Ranger.
Action fans had Roadwars, Ninja Mission and Aaargh! Roadwars mixed racing with vehicle combat, while Ninja Mission offered straightforward martial-arts action. Aaargh! went in a different direction, putting huge monsters into destructible environments.
Rockford brought puzzle-based action and exploration. It was based around the familiar Boulder Dash character and offered a much slower pace than Arcadia’s shooting games. Sports played a major role too.
Leaderboard brought golf to the cabinet. Magic Johnson’s Fast Break Basketball handled basketball, while Soccer covered football. World Darts, SportTime Bowling, SportTime Table Hockey and Pool targeted short, competitive sessions.
Arcadia also listed Blasta Ball and Mr. Do Run ’90 among its releases. The range made sense for a ten-game cabinet. One player could choose Xenon, while another might prefer golf, darts or pool. Two people looking for a quick match could select basketball or table hockey. On paper, it gave operators a cabinet that could suit several types of venue.
The problem was quality control. Some games worked better as coin-operated releases than others. A title designed with home-computer players in mind could feel slow or unclear in an arcade. People paying per play expected immediate action. They didn’t want to spend their first minute working out the controls. That gap mattered.
Arcadia gave operators real control
The Super Select System wasn’t only about giving players more games. It also gave arcade operators a detailed set of controls. The operator could open a configuration menu using a switch inside the cabinet. From there, the joysticks and fire buttons controlled the settings.
There was no need to deal with rows of tiny DIP switches every time something needed changing. Operators could adjust the number of coins required for a credit, change game volume, mute the sound during demonstrations and enable free play. They could also clear high-score tables and set different difficulty levels for individual games.
Time-limited games could run for a fixed period. The operator could increase that limit in ten-second steps, up to 16 minutes and 30 seconds. That was useful, but the statistics system was even more interesting. TenPlay recorded total credits, total playing time and the average time spent on each credit. It also broke those figures down by game.
So if Xenon attracted most of the cabinet’s money while another title sat untouched, the operator could see it. A weak game could be made easier, moved to another slot or replaced entirely. The system also helped operators spot games that lasted too long. A player who stayed on one credit for 15 minutes might love the experience, but the cabinet owner probably didn’t.
Arcadia suggested that an average session of two or three minutes worked well, although the ideal length depended on the type of game. It was a practical setup. The cabinet didn’t just hold several games. It measured how each one performed.
Good hardware didn’t guarantee good arcade games
The Amiga was a sensible choice for Arcadia. It could display colourful graphics, scroll screens smoothly and play sampled audio. Developers already understood the Motorola 68000, and many studios knew how to build games for Commodore’s hardware.
But a capable computer doesn’t automatically become a successful arcade platform. Arcade games had to grab attention fast. Players needed to understand the basic idea within seconds. The first credit had to feel exciting, even if it ended quickly.
Home-computer games often worked differently. They could introduce mechanics slowly, use longer levels and expect players to practise over several sessions. The buyer already owned the game, so the developer didn’t have to earn another coin every few minutes. Arcadia tried to bridge those two markets.
That made business sense. A game could share technology, artwork or code with an Amiga home release. Development costs could stay lower, and the same basic project could reach two audiences. But the approach came with a risk. A decent Amiga game could still feel ordinary next to a dedicated arcade release. Arcadia’s hardware wasn’t the main problem. The system needed a steady flow of games that felt designed for the cabinet rather than adapted to fit it. It never quite got that line-up.
The Amiga’s most direct link to the arcade
The Super Select System didn’t become an arcade standard. It didn’t challenge Sega, Namco or Konami, and it didn’t turn Arcadia into a major coin-op company. Still, it deserves attention. This was an Amiga 500 motherboard connected to arcade controls, JAMMA wiring, coin hardware and ROM-based game boards. It could run ten games, collect performance statistics and let operators adjust each title from a built-in menu.
The Amiga wasn’t pretending to be an arcade machine here. It was one. That’s what makes Arcadia Systems such a good part of the Amiga story. The hardware proved flexible enough to leave the home, lose its keyboard and sit behind the control panel of a commercial cabinet.
The system also showed where that flexibility stopped. Good technology could make the cabinet possible, but it couldn’t create a strong game catalogue on its own. Arcadia built an arcade around the Amiga 500. For a brief period, players could put a coin into a cabinet and play on Commodore hardware without ever knowing it was there.
