
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder has always occupied a strange place in Sega’s history. It was more ambitious than the original Golden Axe, yet it never received the home conversion many players expected. For years, the arcade sequel remained one of those games people knew about, but rarely had the chance to play properly. A new Sega System 32 FPGA core is bringing it back into focus. The project recreates the arcade hardware needed to run the game, with the core described by its developer as being made entirely with AI. The project will probably attract some criticism over its use of AI. For now, though, let’s set the debate aside and enjoy the game.
Not the Golden Axe sequel you remember
The name can cause confusion. Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder isn’t the same game as Golden Axe II on the Mega Drive. Sega released Revenge of Death Adder in arcades in 1992 as a direct follow-up to the original Golden Axe. It used the company’s System 32 hardware and was designed around a four-player cabinet. The Mega Drive sequels took the series in a different direction, while this arcade game expanded the original formula on a much larger scale.
The basic idea remains familiar. Players move through side-scrolling stages, defeat groups of enemies, collect food and unleash magic when the screen becomes crowded. It’s simple to understand within seconds. Then the game starts showing what makes it different.
Four players can fight at the same time. Enemies attack from several directions, large bosses dominate the screen and rideable creatures return with more variety. The backgrounds contain more movement and detail, while the stages feel wider and less restricted than those in the first game. It’s still Golden Axe, but without the tight technical limits of the late 1980s.

Four characters built for arcade chaos
Revenge of Death Adder replaces the original cast with four new fighters. Sternblade is the most traditional choice, armed with a sword and built for straightforward close-range combat. Dora is a centaur whose speed and reach make her useful when enemies spread across the screen. Little Trix is a smaller fighter who can grow fruit-bearing trees, giving the group a way to recover health. Goah is a giant who carries another warrior on his back and relies on raw power. Each character changes the rhythm of the game.
Sternblade feels immediately familiar. Dora moves quickly and can control space. Goah’s size makes his attacks satisfying when several enemies stand together. Little Trix adds something closer to a support role, which becomes especially useful during a full four-player session. The game never turns those differences into a complicated system. It doesn’t need to. The characters are distinct enough to encourage experimentation without slowing the action down.
Branching paths add replay value
One of the best additions is the branching route system. At certain points, players choose between different paths. The decision changes the next stage, the enemies they face and the sequence of events leading towards the final battle. These routes don’t transform the game into a sprawling adventure, but they make repeat playthroughs more interesting. That’s important in an arcade game.
A single run isn’t especially long, so variety matters. Different routes give players a reason to return, try another character and see areas they missed before. Combined with four-player support, the structure makes Revenge of Death Adder feel less repetitive than many beat ’em ups from the same period.
The level design also has more personality than the original game. Some stages move vertically, while others use layered scenery and shifting backgrounds. Enemies don’t always arrive from the same flat line, which makes the battles feel more active.

A demanding test for System 32
Revenge of Death Adder is an excellent showcase for a System 32 FPGA core because it places heavy demands on the original arcade hardware. The game uses large sprites, multiple scrolling layers, colour effects, fades and complex object priorities. Characters, weapons, enemies, shadows and scenery must appear in the correct order at all times. That sounds simple until four players, several enemies and a rideable creature fill the screen.
A small priority error can place a character behind the wrong object. Incorrect timing can cause flickering, broken animation or sound that no longer matches the action. The game may still run, but it won’t look or feel right.
The sound system presents another challenge. Music, speech, weapon effects and enemy noises often play together. These elements need to remain synchronised while the graphics hardware handles a crowded battle.
Protection hardware also matters. Arcade games often relied on additional systems that affected normal gameplay, not just startup checks. If those systems aren’t recreated correctly, a game can crash or behave strangely later in a session.
The arcade sequel Sega never brought home
The lack of a proper home version has helped Revenge of Death Adder maintain its reputation. The original Golden Axe appeared on numerous consoles, computers and later compilations. Revenge of Death Adder didn’t receive the same treatment. Despite its larger cast, branching routes and four-player design, it remained tied to the arcade.
That absence makes the new FPGA core especially interesting. It gives players another way to experience a game that Sega has largely left untouched. The wider System 32 project is still developing, and not every game on the platform works yet. Even so, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder provides a strong starting point. It isn’t just an obscure sequel with a familiar name. It’s a confident arcade follow-up that expanded the series in almost every direction, and it still stands as one of Sega’s finest 2D action games.
