Australian GTA Online players can still walk into the Diamond Casino & Resort. They just can’t gamble there anymore. Rockstar Games has disabled the casino’s main betting activities for users in Australia, including blackjack, roulette, three-card poker, slot machines and virtual horse racing. The daily Lucky Wheel has also stopped working, even though spinning it doesn’t require a standard wager. The casino building remains open. Players can still visit the shops, access their penthouse and take part in related missions. The Diamond Casino Heist hasn’t disappeared either. But the gambling floor is effectively closed. Rockstar didn’t announce the change beforehand, and it hasn’t published a detailed explanation. That leaves Australian players with a simple result but plenty of unanswered questions. Why block the features now, several years after they launched? Is the restriction permanent? And does it tell us anything about how future Grand Theft Auto games will handle gambling mechanics?
What Australian players can’t access
The restriction covers nearly every playable gambling activity inside the Diamond Casino. Players can’t sit down for blackjack, roulette or three-card poker. Slot machines no longer work, and Inside Track, the casino’s virtual horse racing game, is also unavailable. When players try to use these features, the game tells them that the activity isn’t available.
The Lucky Wheel is included in the block. That’s a little unusual because players receive one free spin each day rather than placing a normal bet. Prizes can include clothing, casino chips, GTA dollars, discounts and vehicles.
Rockstar appears to have applied the restriction by location. It doesn’t seem to depend on a player’s age, console or individual account settings. For most Australian players, nothing else has changed. GTA Online still works as normal, and the casino remains part of the game’s map. It just offers far less to do once you step inside.
The casino operated for years without the block
Rockstar opened the Diamond Casino & Resort in July 2019. At the time, it became one of GTA Online’s biggest updates, adding casino games, luxury apartments, missions and a separate chip-based currency. Some countries blocked the gambling features from the beginning. Australia didn’t.
That’s what makes this change stand out. Rockstar hasn’t removed a newly released feature after a few days of controversy. It has switched off a system that Australian players could access for roughly seven years. The timing suggests that something changed behind the scenes, even if Rockstar hasn’t said what it was.
It could relate to classification requirements. It could be a legal precaution. Rockstar may also be preparing GTA Online for a new release, update or platform version and has decided that disabling the casino is easier than dealing with possible regulatory problems. Right now, those explanations remain educated guesses.
Australia has tightened its rules
Australia introduced tougher classification rules for gambling-style mechanics in video games in September 2024. Under those rules, games with playable simulated gambling must receive an R18+ classification. That includes casino-style games where players take part directly, even when the game doesn’t pay out real money. Games with paid random rewards also face stricter treatment. Titles that let players buy chance-based items must receive at least an M rating.
GTA Online already carries an R18+ classification in Australia, so the casino wouldn’t necessarily force the game into a higher age category. Still, classification decisions depend on the exact content included in a submitted version.
A recent Australian classification for GTA Online on Xbox Series X and S lists violence, sex scenes, drug use, mature themes and online interaction. Gambling doesn’t appear in the consumer advice. That doesn’t confirm why Rockstar disabled the casino. But the timing makes a classification issue difficult to ignore.
Virtual currency makes the issue complicated
The Diamond Casino doesn’t let players win real cash. Players bet casino chips and receive rewards that remain inside GTA Online. Rockstar doesn’t provide an official way to convert those chips, vehicles or GTA dollars into real-world money. Even so, the game’s economy isn’t completely separate from real spending.
Players can buy Shark Cards with real money and receive GTA dollars in return. They can then use that money across the game. Rockstar has placed limits around casino chip purchases, but the broader link between real money and virtual currency still exists. That creates an awkward grey area.
The casino isn’t a real online gambling service. Players can’t legally cash out their winnings. But it copies familiar gambling games, uses casino-style sounds and visuals, and encourages repeated play through chips, prizes and daily rewards. Regulators don’t always treat those systems as harmless just because the money stays inside a game.
GTA Online may not be the only game affected
The Australian restriction shows how easily publishers can change online games by region. Rockstar didn’t need to remove GTA Online from sale. It didn’t even need to close the casino completely. The company simply disabled a group of interactive features for one market while leaving the rest of the game intact.
We’ll probably see more publishers take that approach. Rules covering gambling mechanics, random rewards and virtual currencies vary from one country to another. A feature that’s acceptable in one market may require a higher age rating, a warning label or a complete block somewhere else.
That matters for Rockstar’s next GTA multiplayer project. Any future casino, betting system or chance-based reward mechanic will face much more scrutiny than the Diamond Casino did in 2019. For Australian GTA Online players, the situation is clear for now. The lights are still on, the doors are still open, and the casino is still standing. You just can’t place a bet.
