
A new accelerator card called the Performer PF1230 is being developed for the Amiga 1200, and its design takes a different route from most 68030 upgrades. The card supports both the full Motorola 68030 and the cheaper 68EC030. Users will be able to adjust the processor speed through software, with clock settings ranging from 14 MHz to 60 MHz. That’s already quick for an Amiga 1200 accelerator. But the processor speed isn’t the most unusual part. Instead of adding ordinary Fast RAM, the PF1230 uses 32 MB of zero-wait-state cache. In simple terms, the processor can access this memory without sitting around waiting for data. That could help the 68030 make better use of its clock speed, especially at the higher settings.
Fast memory comes at a price
This approach isn’t cheap. The current design needs eight SRAM chips rated at 10 nanoseconds. Those components alone are expected to cost about €240. Add the processor, circuit board, connectors, assembly and other parts, and it’s clear that this won’t be a low-cost accelerator.
Still, the design has a clear purpose. The developer isn’t trying to build another basic RAM expansion with a faster CPU attached. The PF1230 focuses on keeping data close to the processor and reducing the delays that can hold older hardware back.
Software-controlled clock speeds should also make the card easier to tune. A processor that runs reliably at 50 MHz might become unstable at 60 MHz, for example. Users could lower the speed without opening the case or changing jumpers.
Separate clock control for the FPU
The card also includes a socket for a floating-point unit. Better still, the FPU gets its own adjustable clock. Users can set it anywhere between 14 MHz and 60 MHz, independently of the main processor. That could be useful for rendering, calculations and older professional applications that make good use of floating-point hardware.
The PF1230 also plans to offer a fallback mode using the Amiga 1200’s original 68EC020 processor. In that mode, up to 11.5 MB of cache can remain available. That matters because some older games and applications don’t behave well with a 68030 accelerator. Switching back to the original processor could solve those compatibility problems without giving up all the card’s memory benefits.
MapROM, faster IDE and PCMCIA support
The feature list doesn’t stop at processor performance. MapROM support will allow the Amiga’s system ROM to run from faster memory, which may improve everyday responsiveness. The card also includes a real-time clock and an IDE booster intended to speed up storage access.
Another planned feature is improved PCMCIA performance. When paired with the P-Vision graphics card, the PF1230 is expected to reach transfer speeds of up to 9.5 MB/s. That could make the two cards an interesting combination for Amiga 1200 owners who want faster processing, improved graphics and better storage performance in one system.
Development is still at an early stage. There’s no confirmed price, release date or sales plan yet, and parts of the specification may change. Even so, the Performer PF1230 already looks like one of the more technically unusual Amiga 1200 accelerators in development. It won’t be cheap, but its large SRAM cache, adjustable clocks and broad set of hardware features give it a clear identity.
