
Mirror’s Edge still looks remarkably clean for a game released in 2008. Its bright city rooftops, bold red route markers and sharp architecture haven’t aged badly at all. Look closer, though, and the game’s technical age starts to show. Thin railings shimmer. Distant edges flicker. Building lines can look jagged, especially when Faith is moving quickly. A new mod aims to fix those problems by adding Nvidia DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA and DLSS Frame Generation. It’s a major graphics upgrade for an Unreal Engine 3 game that never received official support for modern RTX features. The mod won’t change the art direction, lighting or textures. Instead, it focuses on cleaner image quality and smoother motion. For a game built around speed and precise movement, that makes a lot of sense.
DLAA cleans up Mirror’s Edge without lowering the resolution
DLAA will probably be the most useful option for many players. Mirror’s Edge isn’t especially demanding on current hardware, so most modern gaming PCs don’t need an upscaler to reach a good frame rate. What the game does need is better anti-aliasing.
The original PC release supports multisample anti-aliasing, better known as MSAA. That worked well for traditional geometry, but it can’t fully clean up every part of the image. Fine details, transparent objects and distant edges may still shimmer as the camera moves.
DLAA takes a different approach. It uses Nvidia’s AI-based anti-aliasing at the monitor’s native resolution. The game still renders at 1080p, 1440p or 4K, depending on your settings, but DLAA works on the completed image to reduce jagged lines and improve stability. That matters here.
Mirror’s Edge uses large white surfaces, hard black outlines and bright red objects. Those high-contrast elements make aliasing easy to spot. A rough edge that might disappear in a dark shooter can stand out clearly against a bright rooftop.
DLAA should make those lines look calmer and more consistent, especially during fast turns, jumps and wall runs. It may also offer a cleaner result than simply forcing higher levels of MSAA through the game or graphics driver.
DLSS can help at 4K or with heavier visual mods
DLSS Super Resolution renders the game below the monitor’s native resolution, then reconstructs the image using Nvidia’s trained neural network. That lowers the number of pixels the GPU needs to render.
Mirror’s Edge already runs well on most current graphics cards, so DLSS won’t always be necessary. Still, it could help players running the game at 4K, using demanding texture packs or combining several graphics modifications.
It’s also a practical alternative to supersampling. Supersampling can produce excellent results because the GPU renders the game at a higher resolution before shrinking the image back down. The downside is simple: it can use a lot of performance.
DLSS tries to deliver a sharp final image without asking the GPU to render every pixel at full resolution. In a lightweight game like Mirror’s Edge, the higher-quality DLSS settings should make the most sense. There’s little reason to use an aggressive performance mode unless the system has an unusual bottleneck.
Frame generation makes motion look smoother
DLSS Frame Generation is the feature that will attract the most attention. It creates extra frames between the frames normally rendered by the game. That can raise the displayed frame rate and make movement look smoother on a high-refresh monitor. There’s a catch.
Generated frames don’t improve input response in the same way as fully rendered frames. The game still processes controls according to its real frame rate. If Mirror’s Edge runs at 60 frames per second before frame generation, it may look much smoother afterward, but it won’t respond exactly like a game running natively at the higher output rate. That doesn’t make the feature pointless. Far from it.
Mirror’s Edge is filled with quick camera movement, rapid turns and long views across the city. Frame generation can make those moments feel noticeably smoother, particularly on 120 Hz, 144 Hz or faster displays. It just works best when the game already has a solid base frame rate.
Installation is aimed at experienced PC players
The mod uses an NGX passthrough version of a customised RTX Remix runtime. Installation requires users to place the supplied files inside the game’s Binaries folder. That’s fairly normal for an older PC game mod, but it’s still worth making a backup first. Driver versions, existing mods and different game releases can all cause unexpected problems. This isn’t an official patch, so players shouldn’t expect the same level of testing they’d get from a commercial update.
Other Unreal Engine 3 games could benefit later
The project currently focuses on Mirror’s Edge, but the technical work may also help other Direct3D 9 games built with Unreal Engine 3. That doesn’t mean every UE3 title will suddenly support DLSS. Games can use heavily modified versions of the engine, and rendering systems often differ between releases. Each one will need its own testing and fixes.
For Mirror’s Edge, though, the benefits are clear. DLAA tackles the game’s most obvious image-quality weakness, DLSS offers extra performance when needed, and frame generation gives high-refresh displays more frames to work with. It’s a smart upgrade. The game still looks like Mirror’s Edge, just cleaner and smoother on modern PC hardware.
