A native Banjo-Kazooie port is taking shape on PlayStation Vita

Banjo-Kazooie is running on the PlayStation Vita. Not through a standard Nintendo 64 emulator, either. An early version of Lighthouse v1.0.0 has been compiled for Sony’s handheld, showing that the new native port can work on 32-bit hardware and recognise European PAL game data. It’s still an early technical test, not a finished Vita release. There’s no polished installation package yet, and nobody’s claiming the entire game works perfectly from start to finish. Even so, the first results look promising. The game reaches the title screen, accepts input and runs at close to 48 frames per second in the recorded footage. That makes this more than a basic proof of concept.

Banjo-Kazooie is running natively on Vita

Italian developer Rinnegatamante compiled Lighthouse for the PlayStation Vita shortly after version 1.0.0 became available. The test shows Banjo-Kazooie running directly on the handheld, with a performance overlay tracking processor use and frame rate. CPU usage appeared to sit between roughly 22 and 27 per cent during the demonstration. The frame rate stayed near 48 frames per second.

Those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Performance will change depending on the area, the number of characters on screen, visual effects and how much optimisation the Vita version eventually receives. Still, it’s a solid start for hardware built around an older 32-bit ARM processor.

The key detail is how the game runs. Lighthouse isn’t simply launching the original Nintendo 64 software inside a traditional emulator. Instead, it uses reconstructed game code that can be compiled for modern platforms. That lets the port talk more directly to the Vita’s hardware, graphics system and controls. In practical terms, it can offer better performance, cleaner output and more flexibility than straightforward emulation.

Why 32-bit support matters

Most current PC software targets 64-bit processors. That makes sense for Windows, Linux and macOS, but it can leave older handhelds and compact devices behind. Lighthouse v1.0.0 still supports 32-bit systems. That’s why developers can experiment with platforms such as the PlayStation Vita without having to rewrite the entire project first.

The Vita’s processor architecture is very different from a modern gaming PC. It has less memory, less raw power and a graphics system designed for handheld games from the early 2010s. Getting Lighthouse to compile and display the game shows that the project has a fairly flexible technical base. It doesn’t guarantee a finished port. It does make one possible.

European PAL ROM support is built in

Lighthouse also supports PAL copies of Banjo-Kazooie. That’s useful for European players who own the original regional cartridge and don’t want to depend on a North American game dump. The port recognises supported versions from Europe, North America and Japan. European game data can also provide language options, including English, French and German.

That regional support matters because native ports often require one exact version of the original game. A project might only accept a specific US revision, leaving owners of PAL cartridges unable to use their own copies. Lighthouse takes a broader approach from its first major release.

Users still need to supply their own compatible Banjo-Kazooie game file. Lighthouse doesn’t include Nintendo’s original assets, music, levels or character data. It reads those files from a supported copy of the game and prepares them for use with the native port.

What Lighthouse offers on PC

Lighthouse comes from Harbour Masters, the development group known for native ports of Nintendo 64 games such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Banjo-Kazooie follows the same general idea. The original game remains intact, but the new engine adds features that weren’t available on the Nintendo 64.

Players can use widescreen resolutions, higher rendering settings, modern controllers and frame interpolation. The release also includes configurable controls, custom assets, support for selected ROM hacks and a built-in randomiser.

There’s co-operative functionality through Anchor as well, though support and stability can depend on the platform and build. On desktop systems, Lighthouse can use DirectX 11, OpenGL or Metal, depending on the operating system. That range of graphics back ends helps explain why developers can start adapting it for less common hardware.

The Vita version still has work ahead

The PlayStation Vita test doesn’t mean a public release is ready. A complete port would need proper controller mapping, reliable audio, save support, packaging and extensive testing across every level. Developers would also need to check memory use, loading behaviour, graphical glitches and performance during demanding sections of the game.

The current footage only proves that Lighthouse can run on the handheld and display Banjo-Kazooie at a usable speed. That’s an important first step, but it’s still a first step. For now, Lighthouse v1.0.0 shows two things clearly. Its 32-bit support works, and its PAL compatibility gives European game owners a practical route into the project.

The Vita build adds another interesting platform to the list, even if it isn’t ready for everyday use yet. Banjo-Kazooie is running on Sony’s handheld. Now the real work is making sure the whole adventure runs just as well.
