
WatermelonDS has landed at version 0.7.0, and there’s quite a bit going on here. The Android Nintendo DS emulator has finally completed its move away from the melonDualDS name, but the rebrand is only one part of the update. The new update also brings a redesigned interface, wider support for RetroArch shader presets and an experimental Vulkan feature called FastPath. That last addition is probably the one performance-minded users will want to watch. WatermelonDS isn’t completely changing how it works. Instead, this update focuses on improving the parts users interact with most, while giving more powerful Android hardware a few extra options to play with.
MelonDualDS is now WatermelonDS
First, the obvious change. The emulator is now officially called WatermelonDS. Earlier 0.7.0 release candidates still carried the melonDualDS name, but the final release completes the switch. It isn’t just a renamed APK either.
The application name, icon, splash screen and general interface have all been updated around the WatermelonDS branding. The UI has also had a wider clean-up, with refreshed icons, themes and visual elements across the app.
The game library gets some attention too. Box artwork now fits more naturally into the continue section, while ROM icons have been resized so they sit better inside their cards. These aren’t huge technical changes, but they’re the sort of improvements you notice every time you open the emulator.
RetroAchievements information has also been tidied up. Account details and scores now appear more clearly inside the settings menu, and the achievement interface fits better with the rest of the redesigned app.
RetroArch shaders now work across more renderers
Shaders are another big part of the WatermelonDS update. The emulator now supports RetroArch shader presets across its available rendering options instead of limiting them to one particular route. That gives users much more freedom over how DS games look.
You might want something that better resembles an LCD screen. Maybe you prefer softer pixels, different colour handling or another visual filter entirely. Compatible RetroArch presets can now be used across a broader range of WatermelonDS configurations.
This matters more than you might think on modern hardware. Nintendo DS games were designed for two small, low-resolution screens. Put those same games on a modern Android handheld, tablet or external monitor and the difference in resolution becomes pretty obvious.
Shaders can help shape that final image. Results will still depend on the renderer, preset and hardware you’re using. Don’t expect every shader to behave exactly the same on every phone or handheld. Android GPU drivers can make a difference too. Still, having the option across more renderers is useful.
Vulkan FastPath takes aim at higher resolutions
The most interesting technical addition is FastPath. It’s an experimental rendering option built around Vulkan, and its job is fairly simple: reduce rendering overhead and improve performance. WatermelonDS is targeting higher internal resolutions in particular.
Nintendo DS games can look noticeably cleaner when rendered above their original resolution, but doing that increases the workload on the GPU. Push things to 4x, 6x or even 8x resolution and weaker hardware can start struggling. FastPath is designed to make that workload easier to handle.
Depending on the game and device, that could mean better frame rates, lower GPU usage or simply more headroom when increasing resolution. Don’t treat it as a guaranteed performance switch, though.
FastPath is still labelled experimental, and graphical problems can happen. You may see missing objects, incorrect effects or other rendering glitches in certain games. Compatibility can also change depending on the GPU, Android version and graphics driver. WatermelonDS keeps its standard rendering path available for exactly that reason. If FastPath causes problems, users can switch back rather than being stuck with the experimental renderer.
RetroAchievements support gets more polish
RetroAchievements remains part of WatermelonDS. Users can sign into their accounts, unlock achievements, compete on leaderboards and use Hardcore Mode through the emulator’s normal online support. There are offline options as well.
WatermelonDS can work with an offline achievement provider and RAOfflineProxy for casual achievement tracking when a normal connection isn’t available. Hardcore Mode doesn’t work through RAOfflineProxy, so that limitation still applies.
The update also improves how achievement synchronisation is handled after temporary connection problems. It’s not the headline feature of the update, but it’s another area where the emulator is getting cleaned up rather than simply gaining another menu option.
WatermelonDS 0.7.0 is mostly about making the emulator better to use
Version 0.7.0 feels like a fairly clear step forward for WatermelonDS. The new name and interface make the app feel more consistent. Shader support gives users more control over image output. FastPath offers an interesting new option for Android devices with enough GPU power to push DS games beyond their original resolution.
There are still rough edges, especially around the experimental renderer. That’s expected at this stage. Upcoming work is set to focus on fixes for both FastPath and the standard renderer, better shader compatibility, more interface improvements and wider stability fixes across Android devices.
For now, WatermelonDS gives users plenty to experiment with without completely changing the emulator underneath them. It’s a practical update, and one that puts rendering performance, visual options and everyday usability right at the centre.
