You know Tetris the moment you see it. Blocks fall from the top of the screen. You rotate them, slide them into place and try to build complete horizontal lines before the whole thing gets out of control. The idea is simple. The pressure isn’t. The name is just as straightforward. Tetris wasn’t created by a marketing team or dreamed up after months of branding meetings. Its creator, Alexey Pajitnov, built the name from two things that mattered to him: the geometry behind the game and tennis. That’s really where the story begins.
Tetris started as a computer experiment
Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984 while working at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The first version ran on an Electronika 60, a Soviet computer that was a long way from the colourful games machines people would later associate with Tetris. It didn’t have the graphics power of modern hardware, so the original game looked extremely basic. But the core idea was already there.
Different shapes fell into a playing area. The player could move and rotate them before they landed. Fill an entire horizontal line and that line disappeared. Keep making bad placements and the blocks gradually stacked higher.
Eventually, you ran out of room. That simple loop became the heart of Tetris, and it hasn’t changed much since. There are no characters to control. No story to follow. No complicated list of commands. You just deal with the next piece and try not to create a mess you can’t fix later.
The name comes from four blocks and tennis
So where does the word Tetris actually come from? The first part is mathematical. Every standard Tetris piece contains four connected squares. Shapes made from four squares are known as tetrominoes. The tetra part comes from the Greek term linked to the number four.
Pajitnov took that idea and combined it with tennis, a sport he liked. Tetra plus tennis became Tetris. That’s it.
There isn’t a hidden technical acronym behind the name, and it isn’t some mysterious Soviet computing term. It’s simply a combination of the game’s four-block design and one of Pajitnov’s personal interests. Tennis itself has nothing to do with how Tetris plays. You won’t find rackets, courts or scoring systems inspired by the sport. Pajitnov simply liked the sound of the combination. And it stuck.
Why the number four shaped the whole game
The four-square idea matters for more than the name. Pajitnov had an interest in pentomino puzzles, which use pieces made from five connected squares. For a computer game in which pieces had to fall continuously down the screen, five-square shapes created more complexity than he wanted. Four squares worked better.
That choice produced the seven familiar Tetris pieces that players still use today. They’re usually described by the letters they resemble: I, O, T, S, Z, J and L. Seven shapes don’t sound like much.
But once those pieces start appearing in different orders, at different speeds and in different positions, the number of possible situations grows quickly. One poor decision can leave an awkward gap. Another piece can either rescue the board or make everything worse. That’s part of what makes Tetris work so well. You can understand the basic rules almost immediately. Getting genuinely good at it takes far longer.
From a Soviet computer to screens everywhere
The original Tetris was built in a very specific place and time. It started on Soviet computer hardware in the 1980s, not on a commercial games console. There was no global launch campaign behind it. It was simply a computer program with an unusually strong idea at its centre. Then it started spreading.
Versions appeared on other computer systems, and the game eventually moved into international commercial markets. Its arrival on Nintendo hardware, especially handheld systems, pushed Tetris in front of a much larger audience. From there, it became difficult to avoid.
Tetris appeared on home computers, games consoles, handheld devices, arcade machines and, eventually, smartphones. The graphics changed. The sound changed. Controls became smoother and faster. The basic job stayed the same. Fit the pieces together. Clear the lines. Don’t let the stack reach the top.
The name fits the game perfectly
Tetris is now such a familiar word that most people probably never stop to wonder where it came from. But its origin says quite a lot about the game itself. The tetra part points directly to the four-square pieces. The tennis part came from Pajitnov. Put them together and you get a short name for a game built around equally simple ingredients.
There’s no complicated backstory hiding underneath it. And perhaps that’s why the name works. Tetris takes a tiny set of rules and turns them into something players can spend years trying to master. Its name follows the same logic. Short, memorable and closely tied to the idea that made the game work in the first place.
