Psychic Force 2012 gets a new release in 2027

Cosmo Machia is working with Taito to bring Psychic Force 2012 to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC through Steam. The new version takes its cue from the 2012 NESiCAxLive arcade release, which updated the original game with higher-resolution visuals.

The announcement arrived ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2026, accompanied by a teaser trailer and details of a playable demonstration. Visitors to the event could try four stages of the game’s aerial combat, offering an early opportunity to see how Psychic Force 2012 runs on contemporary hardware. For now, the release window remains 2027. Neither Taito nor Cosmo Machia has confirmed a precise launch date, pricing or regional availability.

What makes Psychic Force 2012 different from other fighting games?

Psychic Force 2012 isn’t your typical fighting game. Instead of trading punches across a flat arena, players control characters who float freely through three-dimensional environments. You can attack from above, below or either side. Movement plays a major role in combat, and keeping track of your opponent’s position becomes part of the challenge.

The game combines close-range attacks with long-distance projectiles, defensive moves and character-specific psychic abilities. Its enclosed arenas let players move across several directions without relying on the traditional ground-based movement seen in series such as Street Fighter and Tekken.

Each fighter comes equipped with a distinct set of abilities. Some manipulate fire or ice, others use gravity or time-based attacks. These differences affect how characters approach combat, giving players different ways to attack, defend and control space. The result is a fighting system built around aerial positioning, ranged attacks and quick changes of direction.

From the original Psychic Force to the Dreamcast

The series began with Psychic Force, which Taito released in Japanese arcades in 1996. Its combination of 3D movement, supernatural combat and anime-inspired characters established the foundations for the sequel.

Psychic Force 2012 arrived in Japanese arcades in June 1998, introducing a new roster of characters and expanding the original game’s combat systems. The sequel reached Sega Dreamcast in Japan in March 1999, followed by releases in other regions. A Windows PC version arrived during the same period.

PlayStation owners received a modified edition under the name Psychic Force 2. This version featured extra content and gameplay options, alongside technical changes intended to accommodate Sony’s console.

The game appeared again on PlayStation 2 through Psychic Force Complete, a compilation featuring the original title, Psychic Force 2012 and an alternative edition called Psychic Force 2012 EX. In December 2012, Taito released an updated arcade version through its NESiCAxLive distribution platform. The forthcoming PC and console release uses this edition as its starting point.

What can PC and console players expect?

The new release has three confirmed platforms, but several questions remain about its final features. Cosmo Machia hasn’t published detailed PC system requirements or confirmed the graphical settings, display resolution and performance targets for the different versions.

Online multiplayer remains unconfirmed, too. The announcement doesn’t establish whether players will be able to compete over the internet or whether the game will support cross-platform play. There’s no complete breakdown of the available gameplay modes, either. Previous home releases introduced extra content and options, but it’s unclear how much of this material will appear in the 2027 edition. The confirmed Steam release means PC players will be able to purchase the game through Valve’s digital storefront, with further technical information expected closer to launch.

When is Psychic Force 2012 coming out?

Psychic Force 2012 is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. An Xbox release hasn’t been announced. For the moment, Taito and Cosmo Machia have confirmed the platforms, the intended release year and the game’s connection to the updated 2012 arcade edition. A firm launch date, pricing and details of the finished game’s features are still to come.
