Mega Cat Studios has released Reknum Souls Adventure, an 8-bit fantasy action platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System, with a mix of overworld exploration, side-scrolling dungeons and combat. Players take control of Cheri, a warrior searching for four sacred spirits across the kingdom of Drissol. Her mission leads through towns, dangerous dungeons and hostile territory, with puzzles, hidden items and boss fights shaping the adventure. The game follows the story of the Reknum series, offering a closer examination of its characters and history. It’s a fairly direct premise, but there’s plenty to do between the opening sequence and the final objective. Cheri needs to explore the kingdom, collect equipment and deal with enemies standing between her and the four sacred spirits.
Exploring the kingdom of Drissol
Cheri’s mission takes her across Drissol in search of four sacred spirits capable of opening a portal to the underworld. Finding them means travelling through different regions, investigating settlements and entering dungeons filled with enemies and environmental hazards.
The adventure combines story progression with exploration. Characters encountered across the kingdom provide information, and certain locations contain hidden items or clues connected to Cheri’s mission. Players can spend time investigating individual areas rather than following a single route from one encounter to the next.
There’s a wider story running through the game, too. Reknum Souls Adventure explores the origins of the series and introduces details concerning Drissol’s history, its inhabitants and the events surrounding Cheri’s search.
For players unfamiliar with the earlier games, the central objective remains straightforward. Find the four sacred spirits, survive the kingdom’s hostile areas and uncover the events surrounding the portal.
Overworld exploration meets side-scrolling action
Reknum Souls Adventure switches between overworld exploration and side-scrolling dungeon sequences, giving players two different ways to move through its fantasy setting. Outside the dungeons, Cheri can travel between locations, visit towns and interact with characters. Exploring these areas provides opportunities to collect items, investigate hidden locations and gather information concerning the next stage of the adventure. Dungeons change the pace.
Here, platforming and combat take centre stage. Players must cross hazardous terrain, deal with enemies and solve environmental puzzles to reach new areas. Progress involves more than defeating whatever appears on screen, with certain sections requiring careful movement and an examination of the surrounding environment.
The combination gives the adventure room for different types of challenges. Overworld sections concentrate on exploration and interaction, and dungeon sequences introduce more immediate action through platforms, obstacles and enemy encounters.
Weapons, special abilities and boss battles
Cheri isn’t restricted to her starting equipment. Reknum Souls Adventure features weapons and special abilities acquired during the campaign, giving players new combat options as they progress through Drissol.
Enemies appear throughout the adventure, with encounters taking place across the overworld and inside dungeons. The available weapons and abilities influence how Cheri approaches combat, particularly during the more demanding sections. Boss battles provide larger encounters at key points in the game. These fights place Cheri against powerful opponents and form part of the wider search for the four sacred spirits.
Combat isn’t the only challenge. Players must deal with platforming sections, environmental hazards and puzzles throughout the kingdom. Hidden items provide another reason to investigate areas beyond the main route, and exploring different locations can reveal useful equipment or further information concerning the story.
An 8-bit presentation with chiptune music
Reknum Souls Adventure uses pixel art inspired by the graphical capabilities of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Characters, enemies and environments appear in a two-dimensional 8-bit format, with towns, outdoor areas and dungeons providing different settings throughout the campaign.
The soundtrack uses chiptune music, accompanying Cheri during exploration and combat. Its audio and visual presentation follows the technical format of the NES, keeping the experience consistent across the different gameplay sections. Players can expect a traditional screen-based action platformer rather than a modern three-dimensional interpretation of the Reknum series.
How to play Reknum Souls Adventure
Mega Cat Studios distributes Reknum Souls Adventure as a downloadable NES ROM, with the digital edition supplied as a 512 KB file named Reknum.nes. It’s not a standard Windows executable. Players need suitable NES emulation software or compatible hardware capable of running the game.
The digital release uses a name-your-own-price system, allowing players to select a payment amount. A physical cartridge edition is available for people who prefer playing on compatible NES hardware.
Reknum Souls Adventure brings together exploration, side-scrolling platforming, weapon progression and boss encounters in a single fantasy campaign. With Cheri’s search providing the central objective, players can work through the kingdom of Drissol, investigate its hidden areas and discover how the events connect to the wider Reknum storyline.
