Fable 2 has finally arrived on PC, nearly 18 years after its original Xbox 360 release. An unofficial Windows version of Lionhead Studios’ fantasy RPG is now available through a project called Fable 2 Recomp, allowing players to experience the complete main story without relying on an Xbox 360 emulator. The first version arrived on 6 September, with further updates already introducing new settings, performance options and improvements. It’s an early release, so some issues remain, but PC players can now get their hands on a playable version of Microsoft’s long-absent RPG.
Fable 2 is now available on PC
Fable 2 launched exclusively for Xbox 360 in October 2008 and never received an official Windows release. The original Fable made its way to PC, followed by Fable 3 in 2011, leaving the second instalment as the missing entry in the original trilogy. Until recently, PC players had to rely on Xbox 360 emulation to experience the game.
Fable 2 Recomp changes this by converting the original Xbox 360 game into an application capable of running directly on modern Windows computers. Instead of recreating the original console through an emulator, the project adapts the game for PC hardware.
It’s not a remake, and it doesn’t replace the original game with new graphics or redesigned gameplay. The focus remains on bringing the Xbox 360 adventure to Windows, complete with its original locations, characters and story.
What is Fable 2 about?
Developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, Fable 2 is an action RPG set in Albion, a fantasy setting where player decisions influence the protagonist’s appearance, reputation and relationships.
The story takes place roughly 500 years after the events of the original Fable. Players control a young orphan whose life changes following an encounter with Lord Lucien, a powerful nobleman seeking to reconstruct an ancient structure called the Spire.
From there, the adventure opens up across towns, forests and rural settlements, with players taking on quests, fighting enemies and making decisions affecting their character’s development. Combat combines melee weapons, firearms and magic, giving players several ways to approach encounters. Outside the main story, there’s a sizeable collection of activities to explore.
You can buy property, run businesses, get married, raise children and interact with Albion’s inhabitants. Decisions influence how characters respond to you, with your actions shaping your reputation throughout the game. Fable 2 introduced a companion dog, too. Your canine friend accompanies you throughout the adventure, helping locate treasure, discover hidden items and alert you to nearby enemies.
What does the PC version include?
Fable 2 Recomp brings the original Xbox 360 experience to Windows, with several PC-focused features included in the current release. One of the main additions is support for higher frame rates. The Xbox 360 original targeted 30 frames per second, but the PC version includes an option to run at 60 fps.
Players can switch between 30 and 60 fps through the game’s configuration settings, though actual performance varies depending on hardware and the area being explored. Keyboard and mouse support is included, with options for adjusting mouse sensitivity and controller mappings.
A newer update introduced further configuration options, including settings for the Guild Chest items. The update expanded the range of adjustments available to players without changing the original adventure itself.
You’ll need the original Xbox 360 game files
There’s one important detail before getting started. Fable 2 Recomp doesn’t include the original game’s commercial files. Players must provide compatible Xbox 360 game data separately, including the executable and files containing the graphics, audio and other content.
The project currently supports the US and European Game of the Year edition of Fable 2. Setting everything up involves preparing the required files and placing them in the correct folders. It’s a more involved process than downloading a conventional PC game and running an installer.
The release remains experimental, too. The developer has completed the main campaign, but some optional activities and less frequently visited areas haven’t received the same level of testing. Crashes and other gameplay issues are still possible.
Fable 2 arrives on PC ahead of Microsoft’s new Fable
The unofficial PC release comes amid renewed attention on the Fable series, with Playground Games developing a new instalment for Microsoft. Fable 2 Recomp is a separate project and isn’t affiliated with the upcoming game or an official Windows port from Xbox Game Studios.
Its first public version is already available, with updates continuing to address problems and introduce further options for PC players. For anyone interested in playing the original Fable 2 on Windows, the project now provides a playable alternative to Xbox 360 emulation, complete with the main campaign and a growing selection of PC-specific settings.
