Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is getting an unofficial PC port, giving players a chance to play the 2008 crossover fighting game on Windows. The project, called MKVDCU-Recomp, brings the original Xbox 360 release to modern computers, complete with controller support, in-game settings and a dedicated launcher. It’s still in development, but there’s already enough working to play complete Arcade matches, with early testing showing the game running at 60 frames per second. It’s not a remake, and there’s no new content to speak of. Instead, the project takes the original Xbox 360 game and makes it playable on PC without relying on a traditional console emulator. Players will need their own copy of the original release to get started.
Mortal Kombat meets the DC Universe
Released in November 2008 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe brought together two very different fighting rosters in a crossover developed by Midway Games. The game features 22 playable characters, split equally between Mortal Kombat and DC Comics. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden and Liu Kang share the roster with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and the Joker, among others.
The story begins when Shao Kahn and Darkseid merge into a single enemy named Dark Kahn. Their collision causes the Mortal Kombat and DC universes to merge, dragging characters from both franchises into a conflict neither side fully understands.
Players can experience the events through two separate story campaigns, one following the Mortal Kombat fighters and the other focusing on the DC cast. Each campaign offers a different perspective on the crossover, with familiar characters confronting opponents from an entirely different franchise. Combat follows the traditional Mortal Kombat formula, with special moves, combos and character-specific finishing attacks. There are a few additions, too.
Freefall Kombat lets fighters exchange blows during falls between arena sections, and Klose Kombat introduces close-range encounters. Rage Mode temporarily increases offensive strength, giving players another option during a match. The game features fatalities for Mortal Kombat characters and heroic brutalities for DC superheroes, reflecting its less graphic approach compared with other entries in the series.
The unofficial PC port is already playable
MKVDCU-Recomp aims to bring the original Xbox 360 experience directly to Windows, using a dedicated PC version rather than requiring players to run the game through an emulator. Getting started involves providing files from a retail copy of the Xbox 360 release. The project doesn’t include the original game, so players need to supply their own files before proceeding with installation.
A Windows launcher handles the setup process, preparing the PC version from the supplied game files. The initial installation can take between five and twenty minutes, depending on the computer, with future updates expected to take considerably less time.
Once installed, players can launch the game directly through Windows. The launcher includes an update system and a separate section for modifications, providing a central place to manage the port without having to handle each update manually.
Gameplay, controller support and performance
The current version of MKVDCU-Recomp can already run complete Arcade matches with working audio and controller support. Early demonstrations have shown the game operating at 60 frames per second using an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER graphics card.
It’s a promising early result, but performance across other PC configurations hasn’t been fully established. There’s no comprehensive set of hardware requirements available for players to compare against their own systems.
The PC version introduces an in-game settings menu, accessible using the F1 key or a controller shortcut. Players can open the menu without leaving the game, and a separate performance display can be activated using F2. These additions give the port a few practical conveniences beyond the original console release, particularly for players interested in adjusting settings or checking performance during gameplay.
What’s next for Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe on PC?
MKVDCU-Recomp remains a work in progress. The current version supports a particular release of the original Xbox 360 game, meaning players with different revisions might encounter compatibility issues.
Arcade gameplay has been demonstrated successfully, but further testing is needed to establish how the remaining modes perform across different Windows systems. There’s a Nintendo Switch version under consideration, too. Work on Nintendo’s console remains limited to early technical testing, with no playable release confirmed.
For now, the focus remains on getting the original Xbox 360 game running reliably on Windows. MKVDCU-Recomp has already reached the point where players can complete Arcade matches, use a controller and access dedicated PC settings, with further development set to address compatibility and other gameplay features.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe never received an official PC release, making this unofficial port a new option for players interested in experiencing its crossover roster and fighting mechanics on a computer.
