Sega is giving House of the Dead another arcade outing, only this time you’ll be wearing a headset. House of the Dead Reawakened is a new two-player VR arcade game from Sega Amusements, built for commercial arcades and entertainment centres rather than home headsets. It’ll make its playable debut at IAAPA Expo 2026 in Orlando this November, complete with a huge dedicated cabinet, gun controllers and a pair of tethered VR headsets. It’s been a few years since House of the Dead received a new arcade entry. Scarlet Dawn arrived in 2018, sticking closely to the familiar light-gun setup. Reawakened changes the hardware considerably, putting both players inside the action instead of asking them to shoot at a conventional screen. The basic idea remains easy to grasp. Zombies appear. You shoot them. Preferably before they reach you.
House of the Dead Reawakened gets a huge VR cabinet
This isn’t a small VR station tucked into a corner. Reawakened uses an 85-inch central display, joined by two 43-inch vertical screens on either side. Sega has built the whole setup into a large Gothic manor-style cabinet, complete with automated door displays. Two players stand in front wearing tethered aiming headsets and holding gun controllers.
The main screen should give people nearby a view of the action, something traditional VR machines can struggle with. Putting large displays around the players gives spectators something to watch without needing their own headset.
Sega has built the machine for unattended arcade operation too. An operator shouldn’t need a staff member standing beside it for every session, which makes a big difference for venues running several attractions at once.
Reawakened isn’t Sega’s first attempt at this sort of VR hardware. VR Agent arrived in 2022, using tethered headset aiming in a commercial arcade setup. House of the Dead gives Sega a far more recognisable series for its next run at the format.
Unreal Engine 5 takes over from Scarlet Dawn
Sega is developing House of the Dead Reawakened with Unreal Engine 5. Scarlet Dawn ran on Unreal Engine 4, so the new game moves onto newer technology for its environments, enemies, lighting and visual effects. Sega’s early teaser focuses more on the physical machine than lengthy gameplay, leaving plenty of technical details under wraps for now.
There’s a practical side to the engine choice too. Arcade hardware gives developers a fixed machine to target, rather than hundreds of possible PC configurations. With two VR players sharing one attraction, stable frame delivery will matter far more than chasing headline graphics settings.
VR seems like a natural match for House of the Dead’s shooting system. The series has always controlled movement for the player, moving from one encounter to another along scripted routes. Reawakened can keep this structure and replace screen-based aiming with tracked headset movement and VR gun controllers. You’re still being carried through the level. Your job is to aim quickly and keep firing.
House of the Dead swaps light guns for headset aiming
The original House of the Dead reached Japanese arcades in 1996 and built its identity around fast shooting, branching routes and enemies arriving from carefully staged positions. Reawakened keeps much of this framework but changes how players interact with it.
Traditional light-gun games rely on a physical weapon aimed at a flat display. A VR headset removes this relationship completely. Players can turn their heads, aim across a three-dimensional scene and react to enemies appearing outside the narrow area occupied by a normal arcade monitor.
For House of the Dead, this could change how Sega stages encounters without changing the basic rail-shooter format. Players don’t need free movement through each area, so levels can stay tightly scripted. It’s still House of the Dead. The viewpoint has changed.
Sega will show Reawakened at IAAPA Expo 2026
The first public showing is scheduled for IAAPA Expo 2026, running from 16th to 20th November at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. IAAPA is a major trade event for amusement machines, attractions and entertainment venues, so Reawakened will initially be presented to arcade operators rather than home players.
There’ll be some familiar competition on the show floor. Bandai Namco is preparing Resident Evil 2: Arcade for the same event, putting two long-running horror game series into the commercial arcade spotlight during the same week. Sega hasn’t announced a price for the House of the Dead Reawakened cabinet. There’s no final release date either.
For now, the announcement gives us the main pieces: two-player VR, gun controllers, Unreal Engine 5 and one very large arcade machine. November’s playable showing should provide a much clearer picture of how House of the Dead works once the light gun and flat screen are replaced by a headset.
