Microsoft has updated the rules of its official app store, effectively banning all programs that let users run ROMs of classic games. The new policy blocks emulators across Windows devices, including Windows 10 PCs, Windows Phones, and Xbox consoles. The move likely stems from Microsoft’s desire to steer clear of legal issues: by distributing emulators through its store, the company could risk being accused by rights holders like Nintendo or Sony of facilitating — and profiting from — copyright infringement.
