
AYANEO has finally shown more of the KONKR Pocket Advance, a compact Android handheld built around a 3.5-inch screen and a traditional button layout. It’s small, focused and clearly designed with older game formats in mind. But this isn’t just another basic retro handheld. AYANEO has added Android, expandable storage, four shoulder buttons and its own software suite. Some major details are still missing, though. We don’t yet know the processor, price, battery size or release date. That makes it difficult to judge the full package, but the hardware AYANEO has revealed already gives us plenty to talk about.
The 3:2 screen makes a lot of sense
The Pocket Advance uses a 3.5-inch LCD with a 960 × 640 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. That might sound like a pile of numbers, but there’s a practical reason behind it. Games designed for a 240 × 160 display can scale cleanly at four times their original resolution. You get sharp pixels without the awkward stretching or uneven sizing that often appears on widescreen handhelds. That’s a strong fit for older portable games.
The panel should also look crisp when running Android menus, apps and games with more detailed graphics. Its high pixel density means text and interface elements shouldn’t appear rough, even on such a small screen.
There is a noticeable bezel around the display. It doesn’t look as sleek as the edge-to-edge panels found on some newer handhelds, but it gives the controls room to breathe and keeps the design practical.
It’s compact, but not especially light
The KONKR Pocket Advance measures 151.3 × 82.4 × 22 mm. That puts it firmly in compact handheld territory. It should fit into a small bag or large coat pocket without much trouble. The weight may surprise you.
At roughly 224 g, it’s heavier than its size suggests. That doesn’t make it uncomfortable by default, but it may feel denser than cheaper plastic handhelds. Whether that’s a good thing will depend on the balance and how the rear shell sits in your hands.
AYANEO plans to sell it in Navy Blue and Coral Orange. Both colours suit the simple design without making it look like a toy. The rounded edges, textured rear panel and larger shoulder buttons should also help with grip. That matters because small horizontal handhelds can become tiring when the casing is too flat.
The controls keep things simple
The Pocket Advance puts the D-pad and face buttons first. There are no analogue sticks taking up space on the front, so the layout feels closer to a classic portable console than a shrunken modern gamepad. AYANEO uses conductive rubber membranes beneath the D-pad and ABXY buttons, which should give them a softer and more familiar feel. It also includes L1, L2, R1 and R2 buttons.
That gives the handheld enough inputs for games and systems that need more than a basic two-shoulder-button setup. The L1 and R1 buttons are especially large, which should make them easier to reach on a device this size.
Several smaller function buttons provide access to Android controls and AYANEO’s software features. There’s also a physical volume wheel on the lower edge. That’s a small detail, but it’s often faster and less annoying than tapping buttons or opening a menu.
Storage and connectivity cover the basics
The Pocket Advance includes a microSD card slot, so storage won’t depend entirely on the built-in capacity. That’s useful, because we still don’t know how much internal storage AYANEO will offer.
A USB 2.0 Type-C port handles charging and data transfer, with support for USB Power Delivery. USB 2.0 feels dated, especially on a new device, but it should be fine for charging and moving smaller files.
Wireless support includes Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. You also get a 3.5 mm headphone socket, which is always welcome on a portable gaming device. You won’t need an adapter or wireless headphones just to play quietly.
AYANEO’s Android software could be a real advantage
The Pocket Advance runs Android, but AYANEO isn’t leaving users with a plain phone-style interface. It includes AYASpace for organising games and managing the library, AYAHome as the main launcher and AYASetting for hardware options.
That setup could make the handheld easier to use straight out of the box. Android gaming devices can become messy when every setting lives in a different app or menu. A single interface for controls, performance and game shortcuts can save a lot of time.
Of course, software quality matters. A good launcher can make Android feel like a proper gaming system. A slow or confusing one can get in the way every time you switch games. The operating system also gives the Pocket Advance more flexibility. It should support native Android games, streaming apps and compatible emulation software.
The missing processor is the biggest question
AYANEO still hasn’t revealed the chipset. That’s the detail that will decide what this handheld can actually do. The screen and controls look ideal for 2D games, but a faster processor could open the door to more demanding 3D systems and Android titles. RAM and storage options remain unknown too.
The same goes for battery capacity. A small Android handheld needs careful power management, particularly when it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a high-resolution display. Then there’s the price.
AYANEO often builds polished hardware, but its devices don’t always compete at the cheaper end of the market. The Pocket Advance could be a strong compact option, but only if the final price matches its performance.
A promising handheld that still needs a price
The KONKR Pocket Advance already feels more focused than many small Android handhelds. Its 3:2 screen is a smart choice. The four shoulder buttons add flexibility, the microSD slot makes storage easier and the software package could help Android feel less like a phone operating system.
There are a few weak spots. The USB 2.0 connection feels old, the 224 g weight may be noticeable and the lack of processor details leaves performance completely open.
Still, the basic idea works. AYANEO has built a compact handheld around a sensible screen, familiar controls and a clean layout. Now it needs to reveal the parts that matter most: the chipset, battery, release date and price.
