
AmigaOS 4 may have reached the most useful moment in its history. For years, the operating system has lived between two worlds. It tried to move forward while still carrying the weight of the PowerPC Amiga platform. That connection gave AmigaOS 4 its identity, but it also limited what its developers could do. Now, that may be changing. Timothy De Groote appears to have gained something rare in the Amiga business: a little freedom to choose what comes next. That’s a real opportunity. But freedom alone won’t build a new operating system, funding, developers or put modern computers on desks. Cash will decide how far this can go.
The biggest problem probably isn’t technical
Amiga users have never lacked ideas. The difficult part has always been turning those ideas into finished products that people can buy and use. Operating system development costs money. So does hardware design, testing, documentation, driver development, etc… Even a small desktop platform needs people who can work on graphics, networking, security, storage and development tools.
That’s before anyone even starts talking about new computers, although an x86 based AmigaOne would probably be the simplest and most practical option. The next AmigaOS doesn’t need an impossible budget, but it does need a serious one. A few enthusiastic programmers working in their spare time can fix bugs and add features. They can’t easily build and support a complete modern platform for years. That’s the uncomfortable reality. The opportunity is there, but it won’t go anywhere without serious investment.
AmigaOS 3.3 could mark the end of an era
A fast AmigaOS 3.3 release would make sense before the current sales arrangements reportedly end in 2027. It could close the present chapter of classic AmigaOS development, give 68K users one final substantial update and generate a last burst of revenue, although it’s unlikely to bring in millions. What happens after that is far less clear.
Amiga Corporation will then take full control of the 68K side of the business. It could continue developing the classic operating system, release occasional updates or simply manage the existing product. Nobody can say with confidence which direction Mike Battilana will choose. For AmigaOS 4, that uncertainty may actually create some breathing room.
PowerPC has reached the end of the road
PowerPC did its job. It gave AmigaOS 4 a platform of its own and helped define the AmigaOne generation. It allowed the operating system to move beyond the original Motorola processors. But the market has changed a long time ago.
Suitable PowerPC processors are harder to source. Motherboards cost more. Production runs stay small, which pushes prices even higher. Developers also have fewer modern systems and tools to work with. At some point, loyalty becomes a technical restriction.
AmigaOS can’t build a practical future around processors that are expensive, specialised or difficult to obtain. Keeping PowerPC support may still make sense for existing users, but new hardware needs a different foundation. That decision won’t please everyone. It is still necessary.
The next CPU choice must be practical
There are several possible routes. x86 would give AmigaOS access to affordable, widely available hardware, and Hyperion could choose from plenty of companies capable of building a suitable motherboard. The development tools already exist, and replacement parts are easy to source.
ARM is another option. It’s efficient, widely used and available in everything from compact computers to industrial boards. It could be a good fit for a lightweight operating system like AmigaOS, but it would also be the more adventurous route and probably the more expensive one.
Then there’s RISC-V. It fits Europe’s growing interest in open processor technology and could give AmigaOS a clearer technical identity. But the desktop hardware and software support aren’t as mature yet. Hyperion needs to look at cost, availability, documentation, driver support and how much work the operating system port would require. It also needs to decide what happens to existing AmigaOS 4 software.
Old applications still matter. They shouldn’t control every future decision, though. A compatibility layer, emulator or separate legacy environment could keep older programs running while the main operating system moves ahead.
Belgium could be the right place to start
Being based in Belgium puts the project inside the European Union, and that could matter more than it first appears. Europe wants more control over its own digital technology. Governments and companies are looking at open standards, local infrastructure, secure systems and alternatives to platforms controlled elsewhere. AmigaOS won’t suddenly replace Windows, macOS or Linux. That’s not a realistic target.
It could still become a focused European desktop platform with a clear purpose. A fast, simple operating system running on carefully selected hardware may appeal to users that want more local control and less dependence on huge technology companies. But the product has to work.
That means modern networking, better security, current graphics support, usable development tools and hardware that people can use. It also needs a clear price and a reason to exist beyond the Amiga name.
The deal was the easy part
Reaching an agreement was a major step. It removed one obstacle. Now the difficult work starts. Timothy De Groote needs funding, developers, partners and a believable plan. He also needs to ignore some familiar Amiga assumptions and offcourse the trolls. The next AmigaOne and OS can’t be designed mainly to repeat the past. It has to make sense as a computer people can use and support.
PowerPC brought AmigaOS 4 this far. It doesn’t have to carry it forever. The window is open. But for crying out loud, don’t make next modern AmigaOS release another PowerPC release. That chapter is over. Just don’t. Go out, find investors and be bold. Start building a genuine European computer platform. At this point, trying may be the only viable option left.
